Ci:lly every pianist uses one or more Cnopin numbers on every program. According to Elly Ney's pro pram notes, "Chopin's Etudes are piimarily essays in certain techni cal difficulties, but their musical value is so great that nowadays one. hardly thinks of them in a technical sense at all. Chopin's ideas on piano playing, of which 1 himself was so great a master, nay he gathered from records left by his pupils as welK as by re marks of his own. What ljp un doubtedly considered of the great est importance was the achieve ment of a "singing tone" in every part, but he was also very meticu lous as to rhythm." The rubate effect, so often abus ed by pianists in performances of hi: music, was only employed by Chopin himself with the greatest possible discrimination, says Ma dame Noy. The term never meant to him a loss of the rhythm, but merely excessive flexibility,- the taking away from the value of some notes to- add to the value of others.
