Mr. and Mrs. De Beck are the

Beethoven Week in the
United States is Set
For March 20-26
The Salem MacDowell club will
.sponsor the local program which
will commemorate the 100th an
niversary of the death of Beetho
ven, the' famous musician. The
program will take place a week
from tomorrow night in Waller
Hall.
A group of particularly talented
Salem musicians have been en
gaged for the evening. Miss
Frances Vlrginie Melton, head of
the piano and theory departments
at Willamette University, will give
the centennial talk. Iva Clare Love
and Helen Selig O'Neil, violinists,
will give solos and duets. Miss
Eugenia Savage, pianist, will give
instrumental solos. Mfss Lena.
Belle Tartar, head of the music
school, contralto, will sing. Miss
Lucile Ross and Miss - Dorothy
Pearce, pianists, win give two
piano numbers.
Beethoven week, March 20-26.
1927, will be a nation-wide pro
ject with George Eastman of Ro
cheser, X. P.. as chairman, to com
memorate the 100 the annivers
ary of the death of Beethoven,
through the performance of his
maaterworks against a back
ground of community expression
with the participation of schools,
colleges, clubs, and civic agencies.
This project will supplement the
tributes to be paid by orchestras
and choral societies and will util
ize all available means for bring
ing Beethoven's message within
reach of the widest audiences with
the aid of the radio, the moving
picture and the phonograph the
three modern ' instruments for
mass appreciation which are the
outstading developments since the
death of Beethoven.
The program of BeethovertH
week Is under the sponsorship of
the Columbia Phonograph com
pany which will make available
to the schools and civic organiza
tions recordings of the major
works of Beethoven.
The features of the program
for Beethoven week, which are
now being developed, Include:
Radio programs presenting "Fi
delio," the only opera Beethoven
wrote, and orchestral pieces, to
gether ' with educational talks on
the master.
Movtng pictures of the life of
Beethoven.
The creation "of an American
ocmpceer of a special orchestral
piece, in honor of the" Beethoven
centennial, and a series of educa
tional talks by distinguished
authorities.
To carry out this program on a
national scale, there are being or
ganized sub-committees of the ad
visory body throughout the coun
try, comprising the civic and ar
tistic forces of each community
participating.

American Legion Auxiliary which
at a single meeting- added : fifty-four-new
members to Its list. This
meeting, held on Monday night 4n
McCornack Hall, closed a success

brought eighty-four applications
for membership to the organiza
tion. Four captains, Mrs. Albert C.

of the winning teams, will be hon

on Portland Program
Of interest in both society and
musical circles is the piano recital
and tea to be given at Miss Cat
lin's school Monday afternoon at
3:30 o'clock. Mrs. William Burg
hardt of Salem, who returned
some time ago from extensive
study in Europe, will play an in
teresting program, and later tea
will be served. The affair is
planned as a benefit for the Fine
Arts building of the Univedsity of
Oregon. A general Invitation to
those interested Is extended.
This will be the first time that
Mrs. Burghardt will play a public
recital since her return from Eur
ope, and her many friend in both
Salem and Portland are looking

has resigned her duties at the end
of the .term. She plans to accom

Madrigal clubs on their tour of

east to Springfield, 111., to Join Mr.
Xanten who has recently taken a
postlon there. Mrs. Xanten will
accompany the -MacDowell club of
Portland to Chicago in April. Mrs.

Grand Council Fire
A grand council fire composed
of the four Carapflre groups of Sa
lem was held at the First Presby
terian church Wednesday evening.
The council fire was in honor of
the Camp Fire Girls fifteenth
birthday. Genevieve Mulkey took
the rank of fire maker. The dif
ferent groups-told their plans for
observing tree year. One group
will hare an outdoor theater at
the home of their guardian. Two
of the groups will cooperate in
