THE OREGON STATESMAN, SALEI, OREGON WEDNESDAY MORNING.; MARCH 2, 1927- SIDELIGHTS OF THE French, which, for generations has been the language of Interna tional diplomacy, is becoming the language of filmdom. .The recent influx of foreign stars, directors and writers has made social gath- . erings in iioiijwbuu a prooiem, - but a knowledge of French seemi ' a - jk jk 1 i r- ic i uue himuuu, buu iiu ucr man in addition there is no prob lem at all, even fn a group Includ ing Greta Garbo, Pola Negri, Do lores del Rio, Emil Jannings,"Vera Voronlna and Milton Sills. Claiborne Foster, who displays her vivacious talent in "Sinner a New York production described as an ultra-modern comedy, wears a white nurse's apron in the dressing room. It has the -advantage over the usual negligee or kimono of being readily laun dered, she explains. Miss Foster, who formerly played in the Chi cago company of "Applesauce" and more recently In New York In "ThePatsy," has the role in "Sin ner" of an unconventional' girl who finds new glamor in her mar riage when she learns of a legal complication. Allan Dinehart is the husband of the piece. Lena AshweU, noted British ac tress, believes if actors studied the texts of Shakespeare's plays with great care and ignored tradi tion and so-called learned writings about the playwright, the stage would have better Shakesperian productions. Her views are set forth in a new book, "Reflections on Shakespeare." Miss Ashwell, after 30 years of acting, is direct ing a group that presents plays at modest prices in sections of Lon don where the public, cannot, af ford the prices of West End. theaters. The Burbank studio ot First National looks more like a gym nasium than a movie lot. Babe Ruth is clouting ont home runs in one picture, Richard Barthelmess is hard at work with boxing gloves in preparation for ring scenes in his next feature, Colleen Moore is playing basketball and tennis for athletic : scenes in a boarding school story, and William Collfer, Jr., is riding hard In a horse-racing picture. Talk may be cheap, bat a laugh i3 worth 330. That is the value Al Christie, motion picture com edy producer, sets upon a guffaw. Costs have to be carefully fig ured, even in the making of rol- licking film farces, and when a producer knows the average num ber of .laughs his latest comedy drew from a series of preview audiences he knows whether he is going to make money or lose it. A two-reel comedy drawing only 20 laughs, for Instance, would be worth, at 330 a laugh, only 16,600, or not enough to pay the cost of production. Supplies Needs For Many New Structures WAREHOUSE---. Produc tion of the picture has just been started. r Helen ' Ford, star of "Peggy Ann;" musical comedy playing in New York, adheres to the prin ciple of woman's independence successfully, she says. She uses her husband's name, however. And her independence does not shut out such housewifely duties as selecting the. chintz draperies for her new apartment, a task ac complished in her dressing room between a matinee and an eve ning performance. But she af firms that home and independence are compatible and the combin ation makes marriage happier. The climb to stellar heights was slow for Julia Faye, brunette Great stage personalities are scarce these days and consequent ly there Is a lack of leadership in the theaters, believes Mabel Ter ry Lewis, who is playing in New York this season in Ethel Barry more'g successful vehicle, "The Constant Wife." In former days. Miss Lewis explains, great actors and actresses established them selves in a theater and dominated the companies that played there. Gordon Craig, son of Dame El len Terry and cousin of Miss Lew is, commented In London that "the theater has become commer cialized and that seems to be all that matters."
