OAC Extension Expert Gives
. Some Excellent Advice .
Mary Brian in "Beau Geste
no changes from the novel.
The book has been one of the
heaviest sellers In recent years.
The unusualness of its theme has
caused most of its readers to see
the picture and vice versa.
The story of the love of three
brothers for each other so great
that one by one they assume the
burden of guilt for the theft; from
their aunt of a famous sapphire
was predicted to be a box office
handicap. On the other hand it
has proved an asset, showing once
again that the film companies
know not what the public wants
until they've been tried out.
The three brothers, after leav
ing their ancestral home In Eng
land meet in the ranks of the
French Foreign Legion, the "ex
ile of the self-condemned" and
there meet adventure, romance
and thrilling buttles; with Afabs
which more than fulfill their
childhood dreams of life in this
organization of fighting men. The
mystery of the . stolen sapphire is
withheld until the " conclusion of
the play. .The audience at that
time is willing to agree with Lady
Brandon,, the boys aunt- that
"Beau Geste" had committed "a
beau geste indeed. "

TAX MEASURE PASSES
SENATE AFTER DEBATE
(Continued from pagtt 1.)
of the bill was only about 15 min
utes and many of the senators ex
plained their votes by saying they
would hare preferred different
rates and exemptions; but under
the existing conditions they were
willing to accept the bill as it was
drafted.
The Patterson bill as passed by
both the house and the senate pro
vides for a graduated scale of tax
with the maximum placed at 3 per
cent. The scale of taxation fol
lows: on the first taxable $1000
or any part thereof, 1 per cent; on
the second; third, fourth and fifth
taxable $1000 or any part thereof,
2 per cent; over $5000, 3 per cent.
The exemptions will be the same
as in the original bill; $1000 for
single persons, $2000 for husband
and Wife and $400 for each de
pendent. Having lost his battle as a foe
of the income tax bill, Senator Jo
seph announced his vote for the
administration bill and was wel
comed as "a prodigal son 'by Sen
ator Staples. Senator Bailey anr
nounced that while a mistake may
have been made in the rates, once
the-bill passed, and went to the
people 4he would -take off WsJ
coat" and fight to aid its adoption
Shortly after the measure pass-
ed the senate, the house concurred
in the senate amendments. The
bill will not be sent to the gov
ernor in almost identically the
same form, save as to a few minor
matters, as when it emerged from
his office 11 days ago.
The tithing bill still sleeps in
the hands of. the senate commit
tee; but its peaceful slumbers are
doomed to be disturbed before
long. It is understood that its
fate Is not at all certain and in
fact many predict its defeat in the
senate. The opponents- may force

Poultrymen's meeting held at
Independence Wednesday evening
was well attended by local repre
sentatives of this industry.: Poul
trymen with flocks varying from
500 to 3,000 were present and the
program was of a very construc
tive nature. J. R. Beck, county,
agent of Polk county, introduced
the speaker of the evening. H. E.
Cosby, poultry specialist of the
OAC extension Bervice. Mr. Cosby
presented the outlook of the poul
try industry from the standpoint
of what has been accomplished in
the past and what can be expected
in the. very near future, as to the
steady advancement being made
by the poultrymen over the state
he declared the outlook to be
tremendous; Poultry raising in
dustry, according to Mr. Cosby,
has advanced 51 per cent in the
last seven years and is now the
second largest industry in the
state of Oregoncattle, sheep and
hogs ranking first. Much of the
success of this Is due to the var
ious poultry organizations
throughout the stafe, the aim of
which is to stress the breeding of
healthy birds, father than fancy

it out of the committee before its
sponsors are read,y for the move
and in that case it may meet de
feat. However the administration
leaders believe they have enough
votes lined up to insure its pass
age and so are making strenuous
efforts to keep those fn line they
have and secure others. This bill
will test the power of the admin
istration as it is understood that
the only reason it got the -vote it
did in the house was because the
governor asked for it and the fin
ancial- situation called for some
sort of action. The senate may
follow'the lead of the house In
.this bill as they did in4he income
4ax.bill. Time will give the an
swer to the question as to what is
to be tne rate ot the tithing bill.
