church for the present.
. ' Second on the list, is a proposed
banquet room, tor men's brother
hood and class rooms for the Sun
day 'school. This '.will be directly
under the church auditorium with
an outside entrance on Liberty
street. This room, as suggested,
will j be 4 0 feet by 4 8 , feet with
ten j foot ceiling, sunlight, good
Yentilation, well equipped kitchen,
banquet room and class rooms.
Third: a remodelling of the
present building is suggested, dec
orate the outer walls with stucco,;
change the Liberty street entrance,'
remiore the gates in front, throw-j
ing the whole east frontage into a
big ; auditorium, add a balcony,
providing a seating capacity, of at
least 300 to 500 additional seats.
The Inside will necessarily need;
to be remodelled to a certain ex-j
tent, first of all new seats, new
rugs, new paint, and surely a new
baptistry. This change would
not! cost a great deal, and would!
make an attractive and showy
church building.
The fourth, and possibly the
most important idea is a new and!
up-to-the-minute church building
The finest in Oregon is neededj
one! that everybody will be proud
of, one that the city will boast of
one that will put the Baptists on'
the; map.
TONY'S WORLD GAVE
HIM NEW VISIONS
(Continued from page l.J
signs of fertility nd harvest.
y , uai x ouynse an mis was xq
Tony. It was indeed a new world.
He; had never believed that such
things existed. The wide country
side, the hills, instead of houses,
the lanes and wide roads instead
of narrow dirty streets, the rivers
and creeks, the trees and the flow-i
ers, the birds and the wonderful
butterflies, all these were an eveij
widening reyelation to Tony. He
watched the bees gather th4
honey. He had never even heard
of honey when he lived in the city!
He watched the birds build their
ne4ts. He saw the fish playing
about in the creek. The flower$
Blooming in the hedges, the bios
soms in the trees made beautiful
pictures for Tony's eyes. His
neart was very glad. what a
changed world It was! His new
world makes us think of an old
poem that started like this:
-Great, wide, wonderful, beautiful
world,
With the wonderful waters around
I you curl'd;
With the wonderful grass upon
your breast,
World you are beautifully drest.'
Tony grew to be a great lover
of nature. The out-of-doors drew
him and held him in its spell. He
studied the things that he saw
He wanted to know all they could
tell him. When he was a man,
Tony had acquired a . sufficient
knowledge of the country and this
farm and garden to become
teacher of other boys. Even men
came to him for advice and help
Tony was a leader among men in
his chosen profession..
The story of Tony makes , us
think of another boy, who started
in a very humble way. but whb
also learned to love the things
about him. He was a lover! of
nature, and of the sports of boy
hood in the country, the old-swim
ming hole, and the Indian camp),
and the old log cabin. One can
not read the story of Abrahani
Lincoln without feeling the 'Jri-
fluence of the simple country life
How' the elements of nature
around him helped to shape and
Tashion his whole life and charac
ter. !". I
It is a wonderful world in which
we live. We do not get the mot
' out of it unless we understand Its
message to us. Everything; trees
flowers, fieldshills, brooks, rock.
all speak to us and instruct ut.
Pity the boy who is shut up in la
narrow street, and who never gets
out into God's great wide, beauti
ful world.
