nearly half the membership of the
house was crowded on the senate
floor . when the voting on amend
ments got under way. It requir

dispose of the flood of ' amend
ments, many of which were, pre
pared in tbe last hour of consider
ation In order to gain strength for
the bill. -
As the voting began those .tn
charge of the bill plainly, showed
nervousness over the final oat-
come, but a tew roll calls on
amendments removed whatever
doubt . there had been that the
senate would overturn the 45 -to
39 vote by 1 which It defeated a
similar measure on last Jane 24.
On' the final 'ballot,- nine sena
tors reversed their positions , of
last year, with Robinson of Arkan
