Local Manager of the Tele
phone Company Gives in
teresting Coincidence
Next after the inauguration f
New York-London telephone ser
vice last Friday, the second con
spicuous event in ttfe field of Com
munication this month promises
to be the dedication of the new
northern transcontinental tele
phone circuit from the Piclfitf
northwest to Chicago and NeW
York some time early next Week.
Manager W. H. Dancy of; the
telephone company in Salem notes
an interesting coincidence in ! this
connection. The first transconti
nental telephone "conversations
took place Just 12 years ago. ;The
pioneer line from coast to coast
wes dedicated between New York
and San Francisco January 25,
1915.
It is probable that the formal
inauguration of service oa this
new line will be preceded by one
or two conversations from Port
land and Seattle to New York; be
tween telephone executives. Tjiere
will be no elaborate ceremonies,
as the line is in demand for use
by the business world.
One feature of the construction
ot this new line is o special inter
est. The "cross-arms" on the tel
ephone poles supporting the wire
represents a total of 1,240000
board feet of dressed lumber,
which would fill one freight train
of about SO cars.

was said, tree roots have pried up
sections of 'kfde'walk, causing
danger to pedestrains. Since trees
in the parking strips cannot be
removed Without the consent oT
the park board the matter was re
ferred to that body.
That the new traffic ordinance
now being, framed should reserve
the entire space across the front
of every theater r other place
where public gatherings are held,
was urged by City Attorney Fred
Williams. He emphasized Sun
day's disaster at Montreal as an
example of the type of catastrophe
which might be averted by proper
safeguards. The purpose of re
serving the parking spaces in front
of theaters is to permit the fire
truck to get in. as well as to give
patrons an "opportunity to get
away from the entrance in case
of a panic.
