() The Salem district produces the best flavored apples in tnc. world Dettef than can be grown m any irrigated district and this fact alone elects Salem as a permanent apple cen ter ; v ' ' . ' : r - ; JJut there are other things that help in this ; for instance, the. Salem canneries k and other, manufacturing concerns,, take the culls and by-products, and Salem is for 'the central Wil f laniette alley the banking, marketing, shipping and mer chandising center of the industry. K The conditions for making Salem an outstanding apple center are that we grow' the varieties in which we can excel, anc) make them of the very highest quality, and get the largest, possible production to the' area, which makes for a ichgap cost per bushel. i , , 'Now what varieties should we grow in our commercial orchards? ' - . ' 'Si One shipping firm advises red apples for shipment. A Salem apple authority says if we are to grow red apples, we should 'specialize on, Spitzenbergs, Rome -Beauties and the Delicious. " ' . :y,: , : .Kenneth Miller, large grower and good apple authority, of the Sheridan section, has recommended specializing on three varieties only: Graveiistein, Winter Banana and- Grimes Goldert. . i. , .Vv iProf. Hartman,.high Oregon Agricultural college author ity, ; (recommend' the Yellow Newtown, Ortley, Jonathan, Grimes and iled Gravenstein. -S ; Prof.-Lewis, when he was one of the outstanding .Oregon authorities, placed the Ortley first on his list for the Willam ette valley. Another authority says if . he were setting out a new orchard rhere he would major on the Delicious with the Grimes Golden, Rome : Beauty, and tWinter Banana as other favorites. -Read what the biggest "apple man of them all, B.W. Johnson, says in the Biehn article; what he says about varieties. - " Another shipping firm would major on the Yellow New- toi ns and the Delicious as the best packers and shippers, and they favor next the Spitzenberg, Rome Beauty and Jonathan varieties. Therefore they recommend these varieties as the bestto grow - - v . . , ' ' ; f Any way, the commercial varieties ought ! to be confined to a very few. . Quality is thething for the Salem district. It does not paV to raise? scrubs. J The scrub, trees ought to be, either j?riljbed out or grafted over to the varieties with, which we excel. - S - ;,:)." ; Do this, and let the world know that we produce the j best flavored apples grown on the wide earthj and by organ- izipg provide against dumping and the glutting of the mar kets, and the apple industry will be one of the big and profit able industries of the Salem district; even of this land of tliversity, this country of opportunity.
