completed only little more than
a year ago. Workmen are tearing
up a section of the main hall
about 20 feet long, extending the
full width of the hall and into
two classrooms on each side
Lower parts of the walls, in some
places to a height of five feet
above the floor are also being re
built.
Dry rot in the wood, caused by
improper ventilation in the space
beneath the floor, has caused the
repairs. Many of the joists and
studdings have been attacked and
crumbled so badly that the floor
began to sag when school opened
and the students began walblng
back and forth on it.
Blame for the state of affairs is
hard to determine, according to
school authorities. Some think it
is the fault of the architects, some
the contractors, and still others
think that the caretakers should
have discovered it before.
The condition was discovered
just about the time school opened,
and an investigation made into it,
disclosed the widespread rotten
ness of the wood. A sample . 2 by
6 inches, in cross section, was dis
played at the last school board
meeting, covered by a fungus
growth, and so rotten that it
crumbled when pressed slightly.
- When the "building wasCo'ir-
structed, little vent space was left
in the foot of the walls surround
ing the open space below the first
floor, and many of the forms used
when the concrete was poured
were left in place, thus blocking
out all chance for fresh air to cir
culate. " '
The moisture and heat in the
stagnant air caused the fungus
growth to form, it is believed, and
stimulated its rapid growth. Such
a condition in a new building
is without precedent, according to
several builders and architects.
The rotten wood is all being re
moved and new joists and stud-
dings being built to replace it.

that the 1,800-pound bruin was
not sick or mistreated, but just
treated too well. He appeared to
have a touch of eczema and bis
dailv chunks of beefsteak were
ordered discontinued and a diet of
bread, milk and vegetables sub-
stuuiea.
