SIXTH GONSEeUTIVE YEAR 7a pages each week in the interests of one of the fifty-two to a hundred basic industries of th THE DAILY STATESMAN dedicates two or more Salem district. Letters and, articles from people with vision are solicited. - Jhis is your page. Help make Salem grow. i i mi i mm LARS A MONTH . 1 V I T i HS M I I s This Is Considered to Be a Very Conservative Estimate, the Industrial Payrolls Making Up More Than Half of the Whole-Best Showing for a City of Salem's Size ' in the Whole Northwest for Steady Volume of Morvey Paid to Wage Earners l As a. payroll city, Salem shines. She will shine more, as the In dustrial development now on gets under better headway. This city already stands preeminent in the Pacific northwest, for a city of her si?e, according td those who have made a careful study of in . -dnstrlal conditions surrounding cities of 20,000 to 25.000 'people. The trade payroll of the city is estimated at over $2,750,000 an nnally; that is, the" amount paid out in wages by the various retail 'establishments throughout the 'city;, and including a growing amount of wages paid out by the wholesale houses and jobbers of Salem. t The state payroll i3 about $1. 500, 000 annually. It runs around J125.000 4 month. In addition tar hese payrolls. - there is the. vast' amount paid out 'annually' from fruit tract, within the trading area of Salem, estimat ed at over $1,500,000. With air fhesespayroIWitW ea tlmated that more than $12,000. 000 Is paid out annually within Salem and within the area that " doea practically all. its grading in Salem. . ; . - . It Is Conservative . ( The Slogan editor believes the probably too conservative. A spe cial edition man got out for the Capital Journal of this city six years ago an industrial edition. He came aain last year and re peated. He estimated the in dustrial payroll of Salem at $8, 500.000 annually. That is $2, 500,000 higher than the Slogan man has given it in the above. That is a lot of difference. . 1 . Tbe' same special edition man said that of the then 25,000 people of Salem proper, 16,918 of them were supported by our home in ner we have 15.000 industrial workers here, we will have 100,000 popu lation. We are going towards the 15, 000 mark at a good pace now. Most of our industrial institutions are comparatively new, and we are constantly getting new ones, and additions to the size of old ones. In the past year a number of new factories have been added. The machinery for Salem's first linen mill was just starling a year ago, and the second linen mill will be in operation within a couple of months. The Western Paper Con verting Co., manufacturing many kinds of boxes and packages and specialties from paper, was build ing its factory a year ago. It is in successful operation now, and will, soon employ 100 people, and several times that number in due course. Another similar concern is in prospect. The Salem dis trict takes about a tbirdof all the can a 'Used" in the "Pacific' north-" west for fruits ' and vegetables; takes over 20,000.000 out of the total of ' over 60,000,000 cans. One Salem .cannery, in one day, this season,, put up over 240,000 cans of fruit. - Our city is 'just get ting its stride as a .manufacturing city. There are many big (things in this line In the offing. We are soon to have beet sugar factories, and mora paper mills. Manufacturers Gregarious Manufacturers are gregarious. One thing brings another; perhaps many others. The operatiou of the two first linen mills in Salem will no doubt bring several spe cialty mills, as soon as these first one3 can spin a surplus of yarns of the kinds needed in specialty mills. All the factories make work for foundries and machine shops, and for box and other spe cialty factories. Salem's industrial growth seem ed alow for a long time; was slow. But it seenw faat now, and will without doubt be faster and fast er from J his tjjme onj ; In vdie tifite, wa will have a million people employed, directly and indirectly, by our flax and lin- - industries alone. xif The following' is a list "of indus tries in Salem, collected and cor rected up to date by a Statesman reporter; and it should be ex plained that isome manufacturing concerns have no doubt been over looked, for (here was no way to estimate of over million dollars , secure the list excepting by. pa a month as the average of the pay- tient and wide'inquiry, there be- , rolls for Salem is conservative; ing no association. of manufactur- ers here, and no other source of information excepting- this same patient inquiry by tbe reporter: Adding Machine Ilepaira Burroughs Adding Machine Co.
