By BOB BISHOP With a noticeable increase in both their spirit and ability, the tail-end Legionaires took the fast est contest of the year from the .Valley Motor by a 3-1 count. ., Every time the front end of the batting order came up, the sol diers scored, registering all their runs in the first and third. It was the first time the Legion has been able to get a full team, and al though they hare beon champions of the league for fire straight years, they took a big drop in the 'percentages --this season. How ever, with a new lease on interest they have an even chance for the pennant if they can convert' their remaining contests into wins. In last night's battle, the Valley Motor was ''safely blanked "until the fourth., when they registered their only run on a four-ply blow by Pitcher,. Fabry over the rl&ht field walk - -i The soldiers' rang the bell in the first on two hits and two errors. Huston singled' to right with one away, Bishop struck out and Gib son hit to the right field .boards for one base, scoring Huston from second. Patterson reached first on' aj error by Proctor, Gibson taking second,' but the side was retired when Fabry struck out Mason. Neither side was able to cross In the second althought the sons of Ford had' a man on with only one away... In the third the Le gionaires 'registened twice. Gabri elson 'singled to right, but was throws out at second on Huston's roller to third, Huston taking first : on a fielder's choice. Bishop dou- ; bled t the center garden, .and i Gibson singled scoring Huston from third. Patterson was whif fed, but Mason hit left field foi ; two bases, scoring Bishop. The - rally was stopped when Hooper ! struck out. Fabry's homer foj : the Valley'" Motor in the" fourtl ended the scoring for the game. Onlj needing two to tie, th. : disciples of Henry came in to their last turn at the sticks. Whet the first man up singled to center it looked as though they had start ed a rally. But the soldiers wen pepped up and when the next bat ter laid a- screeching rap toward second base, GabrielBon made a great barehanded stop, touched the bag and, doubled the runner at first. After this play the Le gionaires were invincible. Mason fielding a hard hit ball perfectly throwing the runner out, and the game was over. Both hurlers did great work. Fabry struck out seven and walk ed none, in addition to his circuit clout. Hooper, for " the Legion. whiffed five and walked one, only -allowing the machinists three hit;, for the entire contest, all three being in different frames! Senators swamped the invad ers from the South in Sunday's baseball game, winning 18 to 0. Beamis, who held the locals to a small number of hits a week ago, had nothing on the ball and was driven from the mound in the eighth after being hammered free ly. Mackersie, the Albany first baseman, relieved Beamis in the, box, but he showed that as a pitcher he Is a better first base man, the locals having no more trouble with his offerings then with those of Beamis. Barham, who started for the Salem team, left the box in the seventh after a safe lead had been piled up and Russell pitched the last three innings. The Invaders could gathe but five hits off their offerings. BarhamJMapIes, and Edwards all hit XorTthe circuit during the afternoon est, Edwards' homer being his first in two years. All the locals succeeded In .hitting safely at least once. The Salem teams' chances of winning the pennant look more distant than ever, in spite of this victory, as the Cycols had little trouble in defeating St. Johns 12 to 2.
