SUNDAY- MORNING, JULY 4, 1926 Four Wheel Brakes Said Necessary for New Cars pear as the answer to congestion on all roads in and out of large proTements. . The experience gained by proper traffic manage ment during the greatest one-day motor car pilgrimage on record sounds again the death note of narrow, inadequate highways. Present and future congestion can only be relieved, according 4"to traffic highway experts, by imme diate' action to .eliminate the "jara-causing,r, features of present road systems.' ; - . i centers of population. Already many states, counties and cities realize this fact and are making or planning these im- THE OREGON STATESMAN; SALEM, OREGON AVOID CO GESTIOli WAY LIES During the past few years the American motor car buying public has been greatly interested in the question of travel ing fast on wheels, hence the trend toward greater acceler ation in the majority of American motor cars which have been . .1. . i - . i , . i: t i rrj t DUiit wunin me past two years particularly . i.ouay we nave ifotor cars in all but the lighter models, which will jump in wink of an eye from a standing start. - 'It is rather poor sort of car which will not travel from kk miipa tn fin ttiiIpa an hour when the watchful eve of the traf f ic officer is turned the other way. This has brought with it the necessity for having cars that will stop with about the same celerity. The four-wheel brake is regular equipment on the great majority of I our pres ent day automobiles in all bu the light car class. And this has brought a hardship on the driver of the light I. i it iiT I. ."i.i.. ill J -T..S .v m which Armstrong Siddcly Sedan car which he Is going 10 nave corrected if his voice can be heard among the larger manu facturers. It's not a pleasant sensation for the driver of a light car to see some six or eight cylinder vehicle ahead of him decelerate at a rate about double his own possibility of stopping. . The vision of crashed front lamps, .bent fend ers, and the chance of a twisted frame are not to his likng. The European light cars stop in an amazingly short distance be cause they have highly efficient four-wheel brakes. With the trend toward the Eu ropean type of light car which is so manifest in this country at the present time the question of four wheel brakes on our lighter cars is receiving serious consideration from the majority of builders. Light cars can be equipped with brakes which will stop them in from one and a half to twice their own length from a speed of twenty miles an hour. From a speed of forty miles and hour it is entire ly feasible to Eton them within three and a half to four times their own length. This rate of deceleration is practical and tney work no haz ard on the occupants of the car. T have seen-experimental four wheel brakes on light cars with these stopping powers and the Binw Tin of the car was accom plished without any shock to the driver or occupants and without the slightest tendency to twist tne wheels The nractical type of four- wheel brake for the light car would be mechanical in type and fully enclosed. In other words the bands would be of the inter nal expanding type located with in the brake drums. Since the emergency brake is that in name only, and is rarely fver used except to hold the car 'jR'va slope or against the curb, it '."could be built to operate on the , G. W. () T - - - same band in the rear; wheels as the four-wheel brake equipment. This is a tVDe of construction which is in favor in Europe and wnich has been used with highly satisfactory results. A recent investigation among traffic officers has shbwn that practically every one of them fa vors the equipping of j light cars with four-wheel brakes Agitation against four-wheel brakes has been largely due to the fact that the equipment was not general on cars below a cer tain nrice and size class. Any thing which makes for decelera tion equivalent to the desired amount of acceleration; in a car is not only desirable but essential as well. With certain states already en forcing laws regarding Bafe light ing, it is not far distant before the same kind of enforcement will prevail regarding braking. In a four-wheel brake era, the two wheel brake car will be up against a stiff proposition to qualify. Already traffic laws are all di rected toward a speeding up of the movement of vehicles. They cannot go far in that direction Without having an equal limit in the opposite direction. When the contemplated Euro pean type of light car makes its appearance' in this country it will come equipped with four-wheel brakes. The question is will our present manufacturers j wait to follow the European lead in this respect or beat the gun to the inevitable. CHICAGO, III., July 3. (Spe cial) The "World's Greatest Traffic Jam" promised on all the roads between Chicago and Mund elein, June 24. failed gloriously when thousands of pilgrims jour neyed tothe Eucharistic Congre3s by motor tar over the 40-mile route. Motorists were amazed by the freedom of congestion experienced on all routes. They were not de laved once and a steady stream poured off the concrete into the acres of parking space hour after hour. Traffic all along the route moved from 20 to 25 miles per hour without trouble. Even af ter the 30-minute cloudburst had drenched the fields and roads the traffic was not tlelayc-d for the concrete dried almost immediately and the cars maintained their schedule. Preparedness was the reason for the congestion "fizzle." The nine routes to Mundelein were carefully chosen in advance. There was an adequate number of traffic officers. No route crossed another, and no traffic Irom side roads was permitted One way traffic to Mundelein was the rule from Midnight until 4 p. ni. From 4 p. m. until the last cars left Mundelein, one-way traffic into Chicago wa3 in force. Hiehways leading northwest out of Chicago are notoriously iammed by normal Sunday traf fic and tie-ups of long lines of r-ar for hours are common. In view of this fact, highway offi cials siezed upon the greatly in creased traffic of June 24 io study v2ys and means of relieving con gestion permanently. Analysis f the smooth-flowing traffir to Mundelein, say high way officials. unquestionably shows that it was the elimination of road intersections and the avoidance of railroad grade cross ings that kept traffic moving Thus their belief that congestion is caused by narrow roads, inter sections and grade crossings was borne out.
