Short Fibers Are Reclaimed

i
Tne raw material used In the
manufacture . of Duco Is cotton.
The linters, or short fibers adher
ing: to the cotton seed after the
long fibers hare been remored for
spinning into thread, are received
in bales at the Da Pont company's
Parlin plant in northern New Jer
sey. V 'T t;" -
Removing dost rand loose for
eign matter from the linters is the
nrst operation which is accomp
lished by an agitating: machine
called" the deTil : duster."
The cotton is' then chemically
purified by" s,eam'and caustic soda,

cotton being used. JaYthe process;
After purification, the cotton is

which contains a calculated quan
tity of mixed nitric and sulphuric
acids. ' ' .
Following the nitration, the wet
cotton is wrung free of. excess acid
through' the operation of cenrifu
gal wringers, where upon it is de
hydrated witfi "alcohol. In the de
hydration process the moist cotton
is weighed into batches of about
forty pounds each. These batches
are charged into hydraulic presses
a'nd blocked into cakes ; through
which the alcohol is forced.
The nitrated, dehydrated cotton
is now broken up and made fluid
by adding solvent mixture, thus
forming: what is termed the base
mixture. This is filtered and then
Incorporated with gum mixtures
and also with ground pigments, if
a colored finish is being made.
The final mixing operation
takes place in machines of large
capacity, and the'discharge is the
finished product, Duco, ready for
shipment.

Rolls-Royce builders and other
manufacturers have adopted the
idea until, the new Ayle trend
4s now seen wherever fine motor
cars are displayed.
Everyone admires the lovely
Diana, gracefully posing on the
radiator cap of the car that bears
her name. The. graceful wings of
the Chrysler, the flying "J of the
Jewett and the silver helmet of
the Willys-Knight are likewise
looked upon with approving eyes.
Grotesqde ornaments that were

TIPS FOR TOURISTS ARE

Gontiaaed from pag 1.)
chains come at the most unexpect
ed times, with the result that a
jack to lift one end of an axle is
a requirement that takes the part
of a necessity.- With this pack also
should- be carried a short length
of plank, which can be" used as a
Jack platform. Such' a platform is
greatly appreciated in ratoy wea-.
ther or soft earth where the
weight of the car forces the jack
into the ground rather than the
jack lifting the car. Many motor
ists carry a small -shovel and this
can be used in lieu of a plank for
a jack platform.
Being away; from home and
mingling with other nomads whom
you never saw before and who you
may never; see again, makes one
appreciate the necessity for pro
tection to all detatchable part,
Make sure of your motor meter
by using one of the several reli
able meter locks on the market
and tie. your spare on by means
of ;a leather covered, -tire lock
chain. A dollar or two ".spent in
this way may save many times
the cost and untold'lnconvenience
. Too many drivers have the idea
that a bumper is needed only' by
the metropolitan driver who" is
compelled' to endure traffic jams.
This erroneous belief has led many
tourists td travel without bumpers
because, in their opinion they are
away from city traffic and there
for -have i no need for bumpers.
This is fallacious, reasoning.
The motor tourist is lust as 11
able to emergencies as the .metro
politan driver for which reason he
has as great a need for a reliable
spring bar bumper. As one auto
motive expert has it: "there can
be1 no compromise with safety."
If a bumper is being selected make
sure it has a deep shock space as
only through this can a bumper
absorb or cushion an impact.
More and more highway police
are becoming militant in the mat
ter of night drivers traveling with
only one head, light burning:.
'Dead Eye Dicks," as they call
such dirvers, are-to be 'arrested
and. fined for lack of proper, head
lighting. Now it is not always pos
sible for a driver to tell whether
both lamps are burning or only
one, without getting out and look
ing in front of the car. This is in
convenient, especially when it is
raining or when haste is neces
sary. Equipping the head lights
with little show-light indicators is
further insurance against , trouble
either, from the police1 or. from
passing motorists.
