Alex ander Facey, 38. a South Dakota rancher, living in the treeless areas north of jthe Black HiUs, has a degree. : o f bachelor of science from the University , , of North Dakota after less than one year's resi dence work. Prior to matric ulating he had only four months school ing beyond the seventh grade. When Pacey 0.EXAKUCR fAttV appeared on the- campus, one month late last fall he had no. credits to show either from college or . high school and yet proposed to receive a college degree at the end of the year. He said preliminary skirmishing of college authorities and after many age-old precedents had been smashed, the man was allowed to enter as a special student with the privilege of - taking special exam inations every two weeks. Then the battle started. Exam after exam was shoved under the nose of the wlld-and-woolly west erner, but he ate them up like he would mother's doughnuts. They could not corner him, trip him, nor stick him. By Christmas time the dean had forgiven him for never having attended high school and by Easter time he was well on his way toward the cap and robe shop. In June he ' was graduated with Honors, standing among the top few in a class of 200. Facey is now back on his ranch, specializing in astroribmy, raising flax and getting ready for a year's residence work -at Harvard or Columbia, where he hopes to get a doctor's degree.
