building of the new Independence
ferry. It will be built by O. H.

labor and is to be completed by
June 1. The new hull Is to be 60
by 18 feet, equipped with two
side-wheels. It will be driven by
electricity. Rosenbaum contract
ed, to build the boat for about
one-third -the price of outside
firms, whose bids ranged from
$5000 to' over $6000.

"Daddy" Steelhammer Here
"Daddy" Steelhammer, old
campaigner of Silverton. was in
Salem Monday meeting old friends
and discussing the current politi
cal gossip. Mr. Steelhammer,
now 82 years old. is one of the
outstanding political experts of
the state. He served in the state
legislature many years ago during
the old convention days, and has
been active in one way or another
In every election since he first
voted. While in Salem he visit
ed for a while with the county
court. He is interested! in the
possibilities of the pending can
didacy of George Hubbs of Silver-
ton for the state senate. Mr.
Steelhammer is the father of
Oscar Steelhammer, Marion coun
ty assessor.
