piece and personally paid for all
the preliminary expenses. This Is
said to be the first piece of field
artillery designed exclusively by
Mexican officers ' and . turned out
entirely in the government artil
lery ;workshop. ; ,
; The . great advantage claimed
for the new gun is its extrcrao
lightness, for It is stated thatit
. will. beT possible to transport i it
even by airplane- a valuable asset
tri artillery, work In Mexico, owing
to tthe hilly nature of. practically
the whole republic nd It is fur
ther claimed that for trench war,
fare .the , gun will be invaluable,
as It is capable of discharging 20
shots per minute. The gun needs
no emplacement and by special in
vention of its designers it can be
made to fire, in any direction with
out change of stability fittings; x .
- As tlre-artiHery shops, depend
dencles of -the Mexican ministry of
war.- are devoid of bp to date ma

turned out almost entirely by
hand labor, all parts having been
made by Mexican employes in the
artillery shops themselves, but iU

perfect. . '
Remedies to Combat Crime
in 1835 Are Familiar Now
MOULTRIE, Ga. Back in
1835, when Andrew Jackson' was
president, there were those who
"viewed with alarm" the Increase
of, crime throughout the country
and roundly criticised newspapers
for .printing sordid details " of
scandalous.. happenings. ' j
A copy of the Western Caro
linian, published that year and
owned by R. W. Stewart, of. Moul
trie, discloses remedies 'for the
"had situation" , which are strik
ingly similar to those proposed
today. " '., i
Among other things politicians
of that day were solemnly warned
against !centralilng too much
government authority In ;the city
of Washington." One communi
cation on the editorial page of the
Western Carolinian said: "I be
lieve the Toters of this sovereign
state will show Jackson and Van
Buren . that we dont need their
advice as to whom we elect to of
fice." 2

I THIS WEEK'S SLOGAN
DID YOU KNOW That Salem is the center of an increas
ingly Important head lettuce industry; that we produce
here a head lettuce of superior quality as to size and
flavor, and are able to get it into the market at a time
when there is a demand for the product; that experi
ments are being made constantly with a view to putting
out a still higher quality .of head lettuce, with more
uniformly tight heads, and that with that consumma
tion the industry here will take first place in the whole
; country and will be due for enormous expansion on lines
yielding big profits for the growers and bringing, an
,jnually large sums of money from long distances, adding
materially to the prosperity and upbuilding of country
and cUy alike?' '
