SALEM, OREGON TUESDAY MORNING, JANUARY B, 102ft 7" ' ,.' .-- ' -- i " t .p. - Jt SMITH TEL15 TALE f OF COflLCO PltUR Willamette River Veteran Writes off Old Time Ro mantic Scenes I Ity Frank J. Smith 1 Of all, the I wealth of romance and picturesque charm that na ture and savage generations hare dropped in thje lap of the Willa mette no : more interesting gem remains than jCoalco Pillar, carr el by nature as a rusged western sphinx, to stand guard while new races and strange inventions sweep away the old with ruthless hand. There i by the Willamette, perched high above the stream, where the roar of the falls; dwin- r dies to a wnisoer and the sween of the hungry gull ventures but rarely, stands the monol it hp fash ioned by nature, perchance in an idle mood When only the. savage stone men struggled with un couth monsters by the river's bank. j Careless passengers by boat and train catching a brief view exclaim. Whafs that?" and peer forward for new landmarks and beauties; loitering 'urchins, look ing for adventure in the twilight, catch a fleeting glimpse of the stone giant and scared by imagin ed evils, chase home; idle lovers, rowing ,by moonlight, aimlessly drift by the stalwart guardian of the valley and weave Strang fan cies to garland; It and perchance grim Indian warriors, who as reckless braves, took fiery oaths beneath this j tribal God, come back in spirit form and sullenly wonder that the monolith still keeps perpetual watch. Romance enough is there ming led with this image; traditions have marked; for their own and cling like Ivy to its bold, bleak lines and carve anew this thing f stone into - fantastic or mys terious forms; . Down 'the bank, broken, prone and crumbling lies the comoanion to the gaunt guardian, a com pan-, ion which after a world of falth- ful battling succumbed to 'wind and rain, tempest and crackling heat and tottered headless to a barren grave 1 There some day. not long per haps, will tie the other stone child; of nature, for wind and weather Have sadly marred the' head that strong and fair centuriesj before the western seas were roved by! Spanish adventurers, and; totter ing to the place left racant b side the com pan ion of. dth!er.Agi he landmark of the Willamette; the watcher of the river and the! chief natural; wonder of the val4 ley will lie down In the last long sleep that even a graven - imago may enjoy after ages of ; tireless watching ' I ' I Five mUes above the' falls o the Willamette stands this monu4 ment of stone.' This huge fan 4 tastically formed specimen adorns the top of a cliff over 500 feet in .height, the base of its precipitous sides reaching to the railroad bed below. This romantic pillar Is formed of one stone ,30 feet in belghti .having the appearance of the head and neck of i a huge giant, th head being about 12 feet in dlamf eter and 10 j feet in length; th neck of the colossus is about six feet in length and has a diameter ofthree feet: J The head,1 like the cliff,- thai supports it, is of solid firm and hard, while the fun of seams and cracks, showing the erosions of time and in t few years must succumb to th heary weight t of its head an some windy night abdicate it high perch and like its! mate few hundred! feet to the south, crashing down the cliff. One obtains, a .beautiful vie' R of tbe peaceful river from th II lofty point. ; Maty small far I can be seen nestled on the pi I teaus of the river! lands. I At the base of the cUff a I 1 within a stone's throw! are t IV passing trains of the - jsoutherjn VafUlr. the nirrnw rnrM nt tK river formed by acres of rocjk 'through which the waters of the 'river rush madly on in their d light, eager; for their "final -leap over (he falls below. The moss-covered rocks on tnjp of the cliff that affords a pleasant picnic ground can be easily reach ed by a circuitous route up a small canyon coming oyt on the bluff from the rear. ' ! '. in the spring; and summer this enchanting spot is covered with rare wild flowers growing through jl carpet of red and green mofs and is the mecca for many Porflt-J land citizens who wish mune- with nature. . to com- GOVERNOR HARTLEY Ml BY WASHINGTON SOLOf. 1 (Contla aad from pagajt.) -arVNhould say what he thinks, r hate AVx governor is trying to put u m hole. Other views expressed were: Representative. Hanks of Kitti tas county "I felt mighty griered this morning when I arose to talk but was denied the privilege. What I wanted to say was that under the heathen usage in an cient Rome, a man was permitted to answer his man face to face and at the same place. We had here a violation of public preroga tive. I have no word in my vocab ulary other than that he's a cow ard who would abuse his high office." Representative Jacobs of Pierce county "If this kind of tactics can prevail, the independence of the legislative government of the state is at an end. The governor's right is ended when he vetoes a bill, he has not the right to coerce us. I leave it to yo'u whether we resent the chief executive's mes sage or whether we meekly sub mit to it." , Representative Davis" of Colum bia county "If I must go on rec ord as to whether I agree with the governor I will have to vote no against the resolution." Representative Reed of Mason cpunty "The governor's state ment, I say to you, I say to him. and I say to the people, is a down right lie." Representative Allen of King county "Had the governor re mained in the chamber 1 would have probably spoken then. I might have been sorry for, my words or the words might have lowered me to the level that his placed him. Today we had. the spectacle of the governor appear ing before this body with language which, had he used it on the UtreejtB,,he-. would have, been-as-J sauitea. it was the language used in logging camps." -Representative Shields of King county "I was just wondering If we were a bunch of pack asses be ing led by a .lion or a bunch of lions being led by a jackass." Representative Lindsay of Clal lam county "I am going to vote against the, resolution on the ground that, it Is unconstitu tional." Representative Burlingame of Walla Walla- county J"Let the majority broadcast to the people and the people will just-laugh." ' Mrs. Miller of Snohomish "I feel that never before has a state government used such abusive language as we have heard to day. ' Mrs. Reeves of Chelan "I want to appeal to the democrats in the gallery and in the house, it is time to get together." - - Representative Goldsworthy of Whitman county -"1 have been damned If I. did and I have been damned If I didn't and I have gotten to a point where I'll do as I damned please. Although I re spect. the chief executive I must vote yes." Representative - George Thomp son of Pierce county "This morn ing was the first time J have ever been called a crook and trick ster." ' COUNCIL DEADLOCK ; OM ATTORNEY VOTE (Continnea from pace 1.) elected to succeed themselves. 'l.y..S.;Liow, was -'elected; to suc ceed himself as street commis sioner. H. M.
