Egyptians grew and spun the fiber

ago! The specimens found in the
King's tombs used aa a wrapper

magnifying glass is required to
distinguish them from silk.

Egyptian hand loom.
The Miles Linen company con
structed a large linen mill thin
summer, , It ia the first linen mill
in' Salem-' to spin flax and trn
out twine. .A second linen mill is
soon ,to Je) constructed. But' tnew
linen mills will be followed . -by
many- others that may weave
coarse linens and fine linens -because
Salem ' can grow fine

it is a very important oil. It Is
upod in making paints, white lead.

important for the maintenance of
man. Linseed oil is .the only oil
produced in commercial quatities

is little waste to flax. if properly
handled.
There are only a very few
places .that flax can be " grown,
retted and manufactured In the
same district. Salem, is one .of
these few.
When the mills are all - con
structed more laborers "are need
ed more ' money is in circula
tion therefore Salem will prosper
and grow with the coming of the
flax industry. She will be, "The
Belfast of America."
