their cases had received favor
able action. Three df the men
are now in veterans' hospital No.

Col. P. Simpson, of the
World war veterans' state aid
commission has written to all Le
gion posts warning them of this
sitnation and assuring ex-service
men that application for the cash
bonus, for the refund of cash
bonus, for the refund of cash
bonus -and applications for loan
may be filed up to and including
June 38. 1926.
' For the general fund of the
Chrsitmas Cheer movement in Sa
lem, Capital Post No. 9, last night
received a total of $59 in individ
ual contributions from post mem
bers. The Post voted $15 from
Its funds as a further contribution
to post and auxiliary work in for
warding 260 packages of candy
and cigarettes to be given that
number of Oregon ex-service men
now in various veterans hospitals.
All Legion members are busy
among Marion county ex-service
men with a view to the securing
of 1000 members for the Salem
unit for the year 1926.
Before adjourning to partake
of a repast provided by the Auxil
iary, members -of the Post were
entertained by Dr. P. G. Staprin,
of -Salem. Dr. Staprin related
facts regarding Latvia, his native
land.
Himself an officer in the Cmt's
guards during the Russo-Japanese
war, be related tales of folk cus
toms In the little republic on the
Baltic sea, of which most Amer
icans know little except that Riga
is its capital. Dr. Staprin told of
his fatheTland's successful efforts
to maintain Its independence de-
spjte' the efforts of Germany and
the Russian soviet government.

who rose from a railroad rodman
to 'become president of the Penn
sylvania railroad and who recently
retired after 54 years of service,
was presented tonight with a gold
