' The radio expert has for some
time been familiar with the com
paratively simple process by which
tubes of the thoriated variety are
reactivated. There is no mystery
beyond the understanding of the
layman in this process, and cer
tainly it is something in which he
i very much interested for it
is by this process that he can be
assured of getting the most from
his radio in point of. service and
dependability, to say nothing at
all of quality. Then, too. iu must
be remembered that a tube which
is. not performing : up to norma?
demand more filament current.
This causes an unnecessary drain
on the A battery, and jf as is us
uually the case, other tubes are
on the same rheosat with "the de
pleted tube, they are also soon
rendered practically useless be
cause of the increased filament
voltage which has been applied to

The dropping off of the effici
iency of a radio tube is not ne
cessarily sudden in fact, evefy
time a radio tube is used it per
forms less efficiency thun the time
before. From, the first Instant of

positive change until finally it
reaches that point whore It calls
notice to itself by Its inability to
amplify properly. Under certain
conditions this falling off is ab
rupt and rapid, but in the main
it Is so gradual as to be scarcely
noticed. As a result the set owner
will usually waste a lot of time
and patience perhaps in -the end
condemning the set before he lo
cates the trouble and buys a new
'tube.':
A large majority of such tubes
' can be made as good as new again
in a few minutes time. By the

tion they may be reactivated re
peatedly" so as to make their totav

How It Is Done
The radio tube becomes weak
and inefficient as its filaments, be
comes contaminated with certain
gases which are contained in the
tube. These "gases fill the micro-
. scopic pores of the filament and
prevent proper action of the tube
by not allowing the exchange of
ions between filament and grid.
- It is obvious then . that it these
gases can be driven off, the prop-
er tube action can lie restored. The j
seemingly difficult task can be j
performedin less than eleven min
utes with the proper equipment.
The thorium, which is used in ap
proximately 90 per cent of all
" tubes, serves the purpose of mak
ing these tubes able to withstand
a considerable range of filament
voltage" thus making, them splen
did subjects for radio tube. rejuv
enation. ' ' -
Rome have, stated that it is the
exhaustion of the thorium which
r determines the life of the tube.
This can scarcely be true in view
of the fact that many tubes which
do not have thoriated filaments
may be rejuvenated providing
they can be kept from burning
out. By the use of a simple and
inexpensive electrical device, the
J-fferson Tube Rejarejiator, II Is
found that by. burning the fila
ment for a very short time at a
relatively high ; temperature, fol
lowed by a lower temperature for
a' longer period, the filament dis
charges gases 1 which have : filled
its pores and is then ready to con
tinue to function as a tube should

power of a seemingly exhausted
lube is restored to its original
strength. . v ;.

fully treated as many as seventy
five or eighty times. -.

communication with all corners
of the world, is furnished in the
recent activities of Don C. Wal
lace, owner and operator of sta
tion ZT of this city. Wallace,
who Is Dakota division manager
of the American Radio Relay
league, succeeded in working fiye

nine successive mornings.'
The break in this last-record
the tenth day came when . 9JST
successfully established communi
cation with the Swedish pitor
ship San Francisco, fetation. SGC,
in mid-ocean between Brazil and
Sweden:- French amateur ' station
SDK and Danish station, "EC,
owned and operated " by Eric
Cohrt of Copenhagen. 1 .
These three contacts were es
tablished in court of an hour,
during which conversations with
the French amateur. Consumed
twenty-five minutes. The! rest of
the time was dJYiH'd between the
other two stations, an,d ;the ap
proaching dawn caused fading of
signals from the English' station
and a resulting breaking in the
string of successive mornings
during which messages and Vnews
had been exchanged. 1
Radio amateurs point out that
this type of communication it
now as reliable as was the pre
war radio work. Barring an oc
casional break like the one above
noted, transmitting radio ama
teurs throughout the world are
maintaining comparatively steady
schedules of communication.

"Know-Your-City" campaign they
would learn many things that
would surprise them; some things
pleasing and some otherwise.
That if most people in most cit
ies really Utd know what was go
ing on, there would soon be many '
changes for the better.
That if they knew and fully
realited the needs of their city,
they would, get together and get
what is needed. -
That a bunch of citizens only
being half sold on the home city
means poor business.
That it means that the city will
get a slow start for better devel
opment and may never arrive, in
fact it may not get any further
than the starting point.
That there Is only one end for
a city that takes two backward
steps for every one; they make
