Exams Today-
Today at 9 o'clock sharp, all
the teachers who expect to take
the state teachers' examinations
for the forenoon are expecteo to
meet in the Sunday school rooms
of the First Christian church. The
examinations start tomorrow, but
will last all week. After these
examinations all teachers who
hold temporary permits and who
have not taken the examination
will not be qualified to teach any
more.

turned to Oregon for trial, accord

Arguments were heard by the
state supreme court here Tuesday
in suits brought by Frank Bram
well. as state superintendent of
banks, to recover $122,000 from
the Fidelity and Trust company
and $22,000 from the Hartford
Accident and Indemnity company,
in connection with the liquidation
of the Portland State bank, de
funct. The amounts alleged to be
due by Mr. Bramwell were in the
nature of bonds posted by. the de
fendant corporations to secure
state deposits in the defunct in
stitution aggregating $150,000.

Pledges Are Received
Nearly $1,000 has boen sub
scribed to the quota of $1200 for
the campus chest at Willamette
university, it was announced last
night. The drive is to continue
until the required sum is received.
The money is for various campus
organizations. Charles Swan is
chairman -of the chest drive and
Millicent King is treasurer. Clar

Officer Edwards, city traffic pa
trolman, and rited to appear in
the police court this afternoon on
speeding charges. Miller Is said

Passing Buses Said to Have
Blocked Road, Collision
Results '
Clifford Brown. . of Salem, was
Injured - yesterday morning in - an
accident when passing buses and
an automobile were jammed.
L. a. Litchfield, driving a south
bound Pickwick stage, tried to
pass PauL, Anderson,, driylng a
Portland-Ashland" stage. Brown
was approaching north. With the
two stages according to the re
port, filling the road. Brown had
no room.- Litchfield's stage crash
ed into him;
Brown sustained Cuts and bruis
es about the head. He was brought
to Salem, where his Injuries were
not to be considered serious.
Brown's car" was smashed severe
ly, while Litchfield's received a
broken wheel and axle.
Litchfield, according to word
received here, was held in Oregon
City on $100 bail for his part in
the accident. The smash-np hap
pened about one mile north of
Oregon City,

the Gray Belle and was a marked
buccess.
The presiding officer was the
president. Dr. E. E. Fisher of Sa
lem. The two principal speakers
of the evening were Doctor W. B.
Holden. who spoke on "Surgical
Menaces,' and Doctor John Fits
gibbon, of Portland, who spoke on
the ."Lesions of the Oesophagus.'
Both are experts and their pa
pers were of the highest order. At
