Members of the state banking
board expressed surprise, at one
paragrapn or yAir. Haines' letter
indicating that the board had
reached- the conclusion' that his
institution - would 'be granted a
permit to operate as a reserve
bank. Ho such conclusion was
reached . at the hearing, members
of the board said. y -
-Equal surprise was occasioned,
members of the board declared,
by Mr. Haines' statement in his
letter that he considered the mat
ter a closed incident. It was said
that Mr. Haines was a party to an
agreement reached at last Friday's
hearing ' that the investigation of
the charges preferred against Mr.
Bramwell would be resumed in
Salem next Thursday.
Both Mr. Kozer and Mr. Kay
said they particularly were inter
ested In letters introduced in evi
dence at the recent hearing which
indicated on their face that Mr.
Bramwell had attempted to obtain
for one of his employes possession
of ai unidentified bank in west
ern Oregon at a price to be dic
tated by himself. These letters
,were stressed by Mr. Haines as
showing that the transaction it
carried to a successful conclusioc
would have provided ample oppor
tunity for Mr. Bramwell and his
'friends to derive a substantial
profit.
Mr. Bramwell, in explaining the
letters, said they were written to
protect the, depositors of the Initio !
tution, and that he had no 'tlVougaf
of profiting by the deal.
When the hearing is resumed
here, Thursday all witnesses will
testify under oath and only such
evidence as is pertinent to the is
sues will be admitte.f Subpoenas
for the, several witnesses fwhb will
be cajlpaito testify will fee issued
here tomorrow.
