In order to set an example,
most of the nationalist govern-!
went officials have one. or tt most
only two wives. Indeed. .Mustapha
; Rental Pasha has no wife at all,
bavins recently befit granted a di
jvorco. Economic conditions also
; serve to make it almost impossible
lor one .to indulge in the old lux
ury of plurality of wives.
I'rior to the present social rev
t.'ution in Turkey, every woman
was obliged to veil herseif from
all except her father, brother and
husband. If a man. either Turk
or foreigner, entered the sacred
'precincts of tte harem he usually
paid with his life, while the mas
ter also had the right to kill his
! unfaithful wife or concubine.
Only three foreigners, an Amer
ican, a Britisher and a Frenchman,
are known to have entered a real
harem when it was occupied and
spoke the Turkish language. By
posing as government representa
tives, thejr escaped the usual pen
alty.
Any departure from the rules of
conduct in the harems was se
verely punished by the eunuchs,
who maintained security of the
places and who were euphemistic
ally called "Masters of the Maid
ens," or "Chiefs of the Aboles of
Felicity."
While Sultan Mohammed VI
had only four lexal wives, he had
at his disposal several hundred
"ikbals." or favorites. Sultan
Abdul Humid was said to have
had l.ooo wives in his harem.
Madam Kdibe Malliday ilanoum
Bey, a Turkish woman trained in
the American Girls' College at
Constantinople., was one of the
first Jo agitjfte a change in the
status of Moslem women, insist
ing that the system was wholly
inconsistent with , any high ideal
of womanhood.
Abandonment of the harem has
been noted as Turkey's most
radical step in its transition from
an Oriental state to a modern
Western country.

Oregon. Washington and Ida- j

tri-state conference for the YM- j
CA, according to word brought
back from Portland by ('. A. Kells
general secretary of the Saleni
YMCA. Formerly the states were
divided into the OroRon-Idaho !
and Washington' conferences.
The committee of the new con
ference will come into active be
ing the first of the year. The
territory was considered hardly ,
large enough to' be in two divi- ;
sions. It will now be possible for
tin1 conference to send special
men through the three states to :
advise in the various departmets. ,
Physical education especially will :
be given attention ttiroughont the
coming year.
Dr. Frank. K. Brown was elect

of representatives of the three
states held Friday plans for con

general problems discussed. The

REBUILT IN PLANES
CHICAGO. in 4 little over
twenty-five months of operation,
the government airplane factory
of the airmail' servic e at Maywood
has developed into a steadily go
ing concern with an output of 50
planes a year.
Almost alTof tlie. material used
in the factory is wartime surplus,
but it is so rebuilt that an almost
new plane results. The planes are
new, as far as the fuselage and
wing surface is concerned, but the
wing frames and the eirgines come
from the huge stores of wartime
surplus.
I'se of this material restricts
the shops rather closely to the
PH wartime design, but a few
modifications have been, devel
oped, chiefly in the fuselage.
The greatest changes have been,
effected in the engine, without,
however, any material difference
in the design of the 4 00-horse-power
Liberty motor. The plant
receives these from storage,
stamped with the names of a
dozen different manufacturers
and rebuilds them completely.
N'ew bearings. pistons and
gears throughout, carefully fitted
by hand, improve the reliability'
of the engine tremendously. The
construction of fifty ships a year
means the building of rebuilding
of nearly 500 motors, as the av
erage use of an engine in the
service is about three weeks, be
fore it is brought in for over
hauling. Another scheme which keeps
the. mail deliveries on time is the
assignment of a ship to a certaij
pilot and no otiier. Kach airmai
also lias his own propellor; whici
may outlast several ships. whii
the engine is changed every few
weeks. When a ship arrives witlv
a different pilot, an inuiry. al
ways follows over the airmail
radio from the general headquar
ters at Omaha for an explanation.
