Madge Wondered at Dicky's
Changed Attitude
There was no mistaking the
look bf recognition that had flash
ed into Mollis Fawcett's eyes at
highf of Dicky. But with wonder
ful poise for so young a girl, she
banished it in an instant and.
looking past Dicky at me, gave
me just the - perfunctory, casual
greeting which her former meet
ing with me called for.
"Good morning, Mrs. Graham,"
phe said in the dulcet, carefully
modulated tones which had im
pressed me in Mrs. Mark's apart
ment.' And then, hurriedly, with
no Undue appearance of haste, she
went on down the stairs.
Sirs. Marks held the door open
for us, and I fancied that she
looked queerly at Dicky. But her
words were for me.
;I ,-hope. yon ain't thinkin of
-hangin' apartments," she j;a'id
worriedly. "I hate to get used to
new neighbors and 1 see you've
bevn lookin at the ones upstairs.
Honest to goodness. I don't think
they're half as good a.; the ones
down here. Don't you agree with
me, Mr. Graham?"
She flashed him a look which
was ludicrously coquettish, and
knowing Dicky's dislike of her, 1
expected him to make a freezing
reply.' But instead he gave her
one of his most genial smiles.
"'They're all bad enough," he
returned. "But I do think these
down here have" the edge on the
others. However, we're not think
ing1 of leaving you," he made an
airy Httle bow. "We are simply
taking an apartment upstairs for
a few days in order to accommo
date some guests."
Mrs. Marks Offers to Help
"OhJ '.' Mrs., MajH's .eyes i were
round. Taking a whole apartment
for guests, evidently did not enter
into1-her scheme of life." I think
I'd like to be company at your
house." she went on. "Now, if
there's anything I can do to help
you'out" she addressed me "be
sure' to let me know. The land
knows there ain't much to, spare in
these flats, but whatever . I've got
in chairs or spoons or dishes, I'll
be glad to help out."
"Thank you so much," I mur
mured gratefully, and then she
finally got herself down the corri
dor, with another furtive look at
Dicky.
Ve were safely inside our own
living-room with the door shut be
fore either of us spoke.
"She's a rough worker, hut she's
a. kindly soul, isn't she?"
The commendatory words were
so i far distant from his former
criticisms of Mrs. Marks that I
filed the . comparison' as another
bit of data in the problem which
I sensed was ready to confront me
whenever I should have the time
and' courage to tackle it. I had
resolved to betray no hint of my
feeling to Dicky, but, I could not
resist one tiny feminine jab.
"I thought you'd revise your
opinion of her when you saw more
of her' I said demurely.
"Aren't you glad of this splen
diferous opportunity to say 'I told
you so, " he demanded gaily. Then
with apparent nonchalance he ad
ded, 'tWhat an old pal for Mrs.
Marks that girl appeared, didn't
she?"
"Why?" I asked with wide-eyed
Inquiry.
She's the Very Type"
"Oh, I don't know. Such a dif
ferent type, so distinctively Latin
and, judging from her. voice and
manner she is several dozen notch
es ahead of our Petey's spouse in
education and breeding." . i
".Whatever she has of either,
ch owes to Mrs. Marks. I re
turned. "She is the girl of whom
I told you whose relatives were
nil "killed in a ffre. Mrs. Marks
and her mother brought her up.
Indeed, her very name. Mollie
Fawcett. was twisted by Mrs.
Marks out of the unpronounce
able syllables which the child
owned.
"Well, you can't dispute that
our frowsy friend has a pretty
taste in monikers," he returnd.
"Mollie Fawcett!" He repeated
the name musingly. "That's a pip
pin, but can you imagine anything
more incongruous than the name
and the girl? She ought to have
a guitar, that one, and be named
Kosita well, what do .you know
about that?" he addressed the op
posite wall fervently.
I asked no questions as to what
he meant. He would not have
heard me if I had. He Was utter
ing little, jerky, disjointed phras
es. "Now how did I cl to
think of that combination I won
der if it. could be worked she's
the very type, all right."
1 stole away to the kitchen un
heeded. Well I know iron experi
ence what the sudden excitement
portended. He had seen iu Mollie
Fawcett's extraordinary beauty
the type which he had been seek
ing for jiome book illustration, and
he would not rest until he had se
cured her cousent to pose for the
drawings.

INDEPENDENT POWER
IS NOW IN BALANCE

s the general opinion that Brat-
ton, the Democrat, will retain his
seat over Bursum, the Republican,
and that Schall will retain his seat
against the Johnson protest. If
this is done no change would be
made in the administration's slen
der majority.
It is indicated that the sixty-
ninth session of the senate will be
one or more than usual historical
import. The principal reason is
the probability that open warfare
between the body and the White
House will break out. It isn t a
matter of party politics, but of
constitutional right, and a feeling
on the part ot the senate that it
must fight to prevent the curbing
of its powers by the chief executive.
Having tastei blood in its last
session, the upper house is ready
for the fray.
Theoretically it is a Republican
senate, but the Progressives or in
surgent senators who broke away
from the party leash in the mat
ter of the confirmation of Charles
Beerher Warren of Michigan as
attorney general :;re likely to do
so again on other matters. They
are essentially of an independent
breed.

been completed on the Elsinore.
Salem's new theatre under con
struction on High st. just south
of State st. for George Guthrie,
owner of the Oregon theatre. The
men have been working rapidly
during the past week tearing
down the various forms that con
tained the concrete.
The boards of the forms have i
been torn completely from the
stage walls with the exception of
the fire walls. The boards have j
also been torn completely from
the inner- and outer forms con
taining the auditorium walls. The
forms from the fire walls of the
auditorium have not yet been
torn down, either.
The men were at work all day
Saturday tearing down the forms
enclosing the artistic front walls
of the building. The two wings
of the tower are now bare, and
over hair the main tower has
been stripped of it forms. The
most difficult work, according to
the men on the job, is that of
tearing don the forms in the in
terior of the theatre, the inner
walls of the tower, and the
forms to the rear of the mezzan
ine floor.
Work of tearing down the
forms holding the huge concrete
balcony has not yet been started,
although it is expected that this
work will be commenced before
the end of this week. The bal
cony is of solid concrete, and will
be the most modern in Salem. The
mezzanine balcony, the only one
of its kind In Oregon, has set;
and work will be started immedi
ately tearing down its forms.
One of the most marked ad
vances during the past week ha?
been that made on the roof. A
week ago Saturday the men had
just barely put In its place the
one truss over the balcony to sup
port the roof and the ceiling. But
during the week, and up till yes
terday, the three large trusses
over the main auditorium have
been put completely in their
pjlaces. The boards to receive the
roof have been laid over the top
per part of the balcony, and it is
expected that the board;? to re
ceive the roofing will be laid over

The boards to receive the final
