Dr. Morris P. Mendelsohn, pro
minent. Salem- optometrist, died
Saturday morning at 7:45 o'clock
at his thome, 1450 Center street.
Death was due to an attack of
heart disease that came upon him
suddenly Wednesday morning.
. Dr. Mendelsohn was 6$ years of
age and was born in Germany.

He came to the United States 48
years ago and has lived in Salem,
practicing optometry for the last
18 years, y He belonged to the
Masons, Eastern Star and Elks.
He is survived by his widow,
Louise . Mendelsohn; three sons,
Louis of Fresno, Sam of Portland,
and Harry of San . Francisco, and
three daughters. Mrs. Emma Fred
man, Mrs. Sadie Sapero and Mrs.
Bertha Conn. All three daugh
ters live in Oakland.
Before coming to Salem, Dr.
Mendelsohn - spent some time in
San Francisco,' and his body has
been shipped to that city where
the burial services will be held
Monday. Members of the Elks,
Masons and Eastern Star will con
duct the services, escorting the
body from the depot.
Mrs. Mendelsohn, his widow,
and his son, Sam, left Salem last
night- and are motoring to San
Francisco for the interment. Mrs.
Mendelsohn wishes to thank her
Salem friends foi; the sympathy
they have shown and the regard
they have displayed for Dr. Men
delsohn.
William Levens, state prohibi
tion commissioner, yesterday pre
sented the governor's cup to the
Cribble Poultry farm, winner of
the best display or one variety of
chickens entered at the Hubbard
poultry show which has been in
progress there. for the past four
days. He displayed White Leg
horns. Mn Levens represented
Governor Pierce, who was unable
to attend the show because of Lav
inr an appointment elsewhere.
Mr. Levens was accompanied to
Hubbard by A- L. Lindbeck, prom
inent .Auburn poultry raiser, and
other persons Interested in the
poultry industry.
This wag the third annual show
since the- reorganization of the
Paultry association. Attendance
was the largest on record, and the
specimens were , of a decidedly
higher quality. J. J. Hirschberger
of -'Hubbard placed second.- with
a -display of White Rocks and Mrs.
Ella Plank of . Woodburn placed
third with White Rocks.
: Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Criteser of
Mulino won the award for the 'best
bird of Asiatic breed, with a light
Brahma cockrel- Award for the
best bird of Mediterranean breed
went to . O. W. Speight of Hub
bard, displaying a Black Minorca.
Mrs. Ella Plank of Woodburn,
displaying a White Rock, won the
award for the best bird of Ameri
can breed.
The best cock bird in the show
was displayed by T. J. Phillips of
Monitor. The bird was a White
Leghorn. The Light Brahma,
shown by Mr. and Mrs. Criteser,
was judged to be the best cock
rel in the show. The best pullet
was displayed by Mrs. Elizabeth
Dinwoody of: Woodburn.
,J. J. Hirschberger won the
award for having the best five
male birds la the show. They
were all White Rocks. Gribbel
placed second, and Phillips third.

tain K. P. T. Wood, 55, Columbia
river bar pilot, was almost in
stantly killed shortly before mid
night last night when he fell 35
feet from the "Jacob's ladder" of
the steamship City of Knoxville
as be was leaving the latter vessel
after piloting it to sea.
Two seamen, waiting in a dingy
at the foot of the ladder to take
Captain Wood to the pilot schoon
er, immediately took the captain
from the water, but he was dead
