MUSIC POPULAR
(Con tinned from page 1)
compelled to admit its extreme
beauty and dramatic power. "Ed
gar. the lorer of "Lucy." enters
the room unexpectedly just after
"Lucy"; has been inveigled Into
signing the marriage contract with
"Lord Arthur." After looking si
lently from one to the other of
those assembled in the room, he
finally draws his sword and con
fronting his enemy," "Sir Henry,"
("Lucy's" brother) demands an
explanation. The contrasting emo
tions of the characters are skill
fully woven into the music as each
takes up his portion of the song.
After a short introduction the
sextette opens with a duet between
"Edgar" and "Sir Henry." then
the other characters enter until
all are singing. The composition
abounds in tense moments and in
climaxes. To appreciate the com
position fully the entire story
should be studied and the thoughts
and emotions of each of the char
acters ; known as they enter this
powerful dramatic scene.

BUILDING PERMITS
1!
BH
24 RECORD
Estimate Year's Total Will
Exceed Last by More
Than $50,000
The amount of rcoiiey represent
ed by the building permits taken
out from the office of the city re
corder has already exceeded the
total amount representing the out
lay for building during the en
tire year of 1924.
In 1924 a total of $1,731,210
was represented in the number of
building permits issued. Already
this year, with full month yet to
go, and permits being issued stead
ily every day, the amount repre
sented in the building permits has
reached $1,746,935, or $15,72fj
more than the total for 1924.
With another full month yet
coming, it is safe to venture that
this year's total will exceed last
year's by at least $50,000, and it
Is very probsple that this year's
total will exceed last year's by
$76,000.
During the past week building
in Salem, inspite of the holiday
brought about by Thanksgiving,
and Inspite of the xnoistness of
the weather, bas not; been retard
ed. During the week, permits
were taken out representing a
total outlay of $20,930. Of this
amount all but $300 represents
the building of new, homes. The
$300. represents the building of a
smsii garage. V
For some time it has been pre
dicted at the office of the city
recorder that the lateness of the
year -would naturally abate to "a
great extent the amount of build
ing being, carried out In the city.
But Salem's' phenomal growth in
population has brought about such
a cramped housing condition that
it is very likely that the present
rate ot building will be carried on
from now till the rest of the year.
Business men - throughout the
city are also complaining of the
lack of office space, and the new
bank and ) office building of ten
stories in height to bejbuilt by the
First National Banfc'-ot Salem on -i
the corner 'Of, Liberty- and State j
streets now occupied by Pomeroy y
nd Keene, Jewelers, will largely
relieve this conjestion'.
