MAKING FRIENDS IT HAS BEEN
said that the only way to make real

get the friends, the profit will take care

WHY MADGE TOOK A DOmLE
DOSE OF SEDATIVE
The front windows of our
apartment are so situated that by
leaning out once can command a
view of both sides of the. street
for many yaras. Only two or
three seconds had elapsed be
tween Dicky's departing bang of
the front door dnd my half In
voluntary rush to the - window.
There was no possible chance of
his getting out of sight in that
time if he had walked directly up
or down the street as in his dally
custom, but in neither direction
could I see him. I was forced to
the conclusion that either he had
pone into one of the small shops
near the door-cheap places which
could hold no possible purchasing
lure for his fastidious tastes-or
that he still was standing in the
small entrance hall of the apart
ment, waiting for what?
Madge Is Suspicious.
Civilization is the thinnest ve
neer possible. I was forced to
that conclusion when I found my
self at the upper ha!l door, my
hand on the knob ready to rush
down the stairs and confirm my
suspicions- in primitive fashion.
I gave a little shudder at the read
iness with which all my tenets of
ethical conduct and gooi breeding
had vanished at Dicky's queer con
duct, and, returning to the living
room, sat down, and forced myself
back to sanity and the renewed
resolution to reserve judgment
upon my temperamental husband
until something more definite
than the odd, coincidences of the
last 24 hours came under, my ob
servation. ..
But while I was able to control
my jealous anger, all the more
consuming because I bad but
vague ideads of the cause for it.
I could not restore my nerves to
steadiness. All the zest was gone
ffom my plans for the dinner with
which I had meant to welcome
Lillian. 1 wished. Wearily, that I
had disregarded Edwin Braith
waite's delicate digestion, his
wife's care of him. and Lillian's
liking for home cooking, and per
mitted Dicky to take them all to
a restaurant, I could have p'ead
ed a headache and remained at
home. Indeed, i felt forebodingly
that I would not have needed to
plead an untruth. My temples
were giving me all the prelimin
ary symptoms of a severe nervous
l.idache, !
A New Discovery.
I always have avoided drugs for
headaches: but this was a real
emergency. After . combatint

sitlon. I went into the bathroom
took down a bottle of pellets gen
erally recommended for headaches
and swallowed two bt them, the
dose usually - prescribed for ex
treme pain. .Then I went into
the bedroom and lay down, trying
to relax for the few minutes in
terval I had calculated could be
devoted to getting myself togeth
er. With great relief I felt tho
throbbing leave my temples and
a grateful drowsiness steal over
me. I remembered my uncanny
ability to awaken at any minute
I wished, and looking at my wrist
watch, J fixed upon fifteen min
utes as the length of my nap and
drifted off into slumber.
The double dose of sedative was
too powerful for my ' will power,
however, and ! did not know how
long I would have slept if I had
not heard the screech and clang
of fire apparatus racing along the
street. I Jumped up nervously,
rushed to the window, saw that
they were ' already far down the
street, and assured that . there
was no danger near, looked at my
watch, finding that I had slept a
half hour instead of the quarter I
had alloted myself.
With a hasty re-furbishing of
my toilet, I sat down and made
out a methodical list of the extra
dishes and silver I would heed for
the dinner, for the resources of
the apartment were the usual
ones given "light housekeeping.
and I had not brought any of our
solid silver with us for tear of
thieves. I meant to get the extra
things I needed at the nearest
five and ten-cent store, and even
through my depression my lips
curved In a mischievous grin as I
visioned Harriet Bralthwaite's fas
tidious face when she should aeo
the outlay.
I checked my list carefully, then
went into the kitchen to be sure
that I had omitted no item neces
sary for the dinner, as I had no
time to make a separate trip to
the shops. 1 was almost ready to
leave when I caught a glimpse of
something white beneath the
kitchen table, and picking it up.
saw it was one of Dicky's handker
chiefs, freshly ironed, and folded
in a fashion which his laundry
never used. .

English Consider Women for
Ministry to Meet Situation
LONDON "Her Grace, the
Archbishop of Canterbury," may
be known by the present genera
tion of children in England.
So evidently is the lack of can

Church of England that authori

the problem of admitting women
to the Holy orders. ...
Several leading churchmen have
warned that the . day of women
preachers is - in , sight, : This - re

removed in the 'next generation,
they said, unless there ia a revival
of religious interest in the coun
