New French' Champagnes to
Be Good But Less of Them
RHEIMis. Champagnes
of
France, this year are, going to
be good in quality but there will
be less of thorn. "
The champagne harvest was
finished in .splendid weather and
the grapes in the cellars, ready
for the special preparation' neces
sary for the production of the
world's most renowned wine. are
expected to furnish about 2,750,
000 gallons. ' , ,
Mildew and blight caused much
damage, the" secretary -..of the
Champagne wine-growers' asso
ciation reported, but the cfpp is
generally healthy. .
Vomen play an important part I
in the wine industry, of Cham
pagne. It is women who dig out
the vines which axe attacked by
phylloxera and who replace them
v.ith vines' imported , from the
United States. Women prune the
vines and harvest much, of the
crop. They alsp make up a large
part of the labor required in the
cellars and In labelling and dress
ing up the. bottles with the gay
gold foil.
