ucts is now being offered to the
Salem public. This new product
is charcoal briquets, and they are
being handled by the Valley Mo
tor company, local Ford dealers.
-The .new fuel is brought, from
the forests of northern Michigan
It comes in little, compact pillow
shaped blocks of charcoal put to
gether under tremendous pressure.
They are slow burning andT'glow
wun intense neat. There is no
smoke and almost no ash. ,,
Following is the approximate
analysis of the briquets: Moisture,
2.1 C per cent; volatile, 2 Infixed
carbon, 74; ash, 2.S5 per cent.

the Salem Chamber of Commerce,"
declared T. D.-Kay, state treasurer
in addresslag members of. the. or
ganization at the weekly luncheon
Monday. The luncheon Was a spe?
cial complimentary one for' those
members who have volunteered to
w-ork in the membership drive that
waa started immediately after the
luncheon. Mr. Kay .enumerated
thearious "Benefits of the Board
of Trade and Why We Should Sup
port It."
"If it were not. for the Cham
ber of Commerce, I venture the
assertion that the most of you
business men would not become
acquainted with each other. The
Chamber of Commerce and the
Rotary give me as much pleasure
as anything else." !
Mr. Kay declared that the pub
lic spirit of Salem would not be
complete without the Chamber of
Commerce, citing as reasons for
its existence, the entertaining of
sufcus delegation's aa Hhat which
came from the Portland Chamber
of Commerce last Friday to inspect
the flax industry of Salem.
"From a business standpoint

T. M. Hicks, president of the
loeal chamber, declared that "the
attendance of more than 100 men
willing to work indicates the back
ing of the business men of the
city. We have had many drives
before, but never have we ha-1
so many or such enthusiastic
workers.
The three captains, Ed Schunke
Fred Thielsen and Ross Miles were
all called upon to make brief
talks, and each expressed the idea
that his teamyrwould prove the
theory that "action speaks louder
than words."

The personnel of the women's
debate squad at Willamette uni
versity was 'chosen last night.
Each girl trying out was requested
to debate for five minutes. Prof.
S. B. a,ughlinand Prof. Roy Har
ding Assisted Prof. Horace Rahs
kopf; head qf the public speaking
department at the university, in
electing the team.
The following women were
chosen to make up the Willamette
