KIMBALL COLLEGE -
RE-LOCATION AIM
(Continued from psge 1)
center. In a long conversation
with , my predecessor. Dr. Talbot,
less than' two months before his
death, he expressed to me his clear
Judgment that Kimball should be
re-located and outlined in detail
his plans for the future. This of
course, was-before I had any ei
pectation of having any relation
to the school.
"Every personal consideration
would lead me to choose Sslem as
the permanent location of Kimball
but a program of the nature of the
Kimball program must be decided
upon the basis of Christian states
manship. Vhile Salem is an ideal
location for a college such as Wil
lamette, it Is not suited to the pro
regional training of Christian
leaders today. The whole trend of
modern theological education is
towafd the: large centers and in
contact with the great universi
ties. Every theological school in
Methodism is either at or imme-
1 lately contiguous to the greatest
r-ity in its patronizing territory. In
two instances, namely: in the case
of Boston School of Theology and
of Macleay School of Theology at
Los Angeles,, the schools were or
ganized as Kimball has been at a
smaller center and later, under
stress'of circumstances, were mov
ed into the larger centers and into
contact with the great universi
ties. Several theological schools
in and about Chicago either Lave,
carried out or are contemplating
removal programs to be in affil
iation" with great universities.
Drew Theological Seminary, just
outside of New. York, one of the
great seminaries of Methodism, of
fers its students opportunities for
post-graduate work in Columbia
university and New York univer
sity. '
"To develop an adequate pro
gram Kimball School of Theology
must have opportunities for real
erinic work, for more adequate
student self-support, and for more
student pastorates, in addition to
opportunities for district post
graduate work. Such opportuni
ties are afforded in the largest
measure at Seattle. If the school
is established there it will be en
tirely independent of the Univer
sity of Washington, although it
will be so located in relationship
to the campus that Kimball stud
ents will have the advantage of
graduate work in the university.
It is o be "noted that the develop
ment of Kimball at Seattle will in
no sense -be In competition with
the Methodist colleges, as Kimball
will do no academic work but will
confine its -curriculum exclusively
to professional and post-graduate
wo'k. Whatever may be the fianl
decision : a&to the program, the
work of the ; preentr school year
will be carried forward without
interruption. If the change is de
termined rupon It will be my expec
tation that the new program will
begin next fall.
"Mrs. Luella D. Kimball, donor
of the present Kimball building,
and the long-time friend of the in
stitution, has expressed herself as
In eritfre accord with theadminis
tration of Kimball in working out
a larger program that will better
serve the intrests of the northwest
and of th church." i
