Nature of the Holy Spirit
Sermon delivered at t!he Court

Text, from John 16:13-
One is treadinj on holy ground
when discussing the Holy Spirit.
There is much confusion in the
Christian, world regarding the na
ture of this Comforter Christ
promises Hig disciples after His
death and ascension. This con
fusion has come due to persons
trusting their emotion, ; personal
experience or what others say,
rather than taking their informa
tion from the true source.
As in all things divine the Bible
is the only source of information
concerning the Holy Spirit. In
the Old Testament there are 88.
distinct references and in the New
Testament 264 references to he
Holy Spirit. A carefutj study of
all these passages will reveal all
' there v1b to. know this j side of

Jesus in words of our text and
context refers to Him as a per
sonality. "He" and "him" are
pronouns used by the Savior in
speaking of the comforter He pro

claim: "an influence emanating
from God," or " a mere imperson

Scripture holds Him a person ac
tive in all ways as a personality.
He speaks. He testifies. He teaches
and quickens the mind. He guides.
He leads and forbids. He searches.
Only a person' does these things.
Furthermore, Scriptural' char
acteristics of the Holy Spirit re
veal a personality. They are com
mon to a person: mind, knowl
edge, affection, will, goodness.
Like a person He suffers slights
and injuries; He is grieved and
vlxed; He is despised, blasphemed
and lied unto, and- resisted.
Not only is He a person, but
like God and Christ, is a divine
personality. He possesses attri
butes like unto God. He is called
"the eternal Spirit; He knows the
"deep things of God." He is all
powerful and omnipresent.
Also the works attributed to
Him in the Bible manifest His
divinity. In the creation He "the
Spirit of God moved upon the face
of the waters;" the heavens were
garnished by Him and Job said,
"The Spirit of God hath made me.
and the breath of the Almighty
giveth me life." He regenerates
the soul lost In sin for except, he
"be born of the water and the
Spirit he cannot enter the king
dom of God.!' He raises the body
from death for "if the Spirit of
Him (God) that raised up Jesus
from the dead," sayeth Paul,
"dwelleth in you. He' that raised
un Christ Jesus from the dead
shall give life also to your mortal
bodies through His Spirit th.at
dwelleth in. you." He is the
source of the miraculous. It was
by His miraculous power that He
