sessing liquor, has forfeited his
$100 bail.

A new petition has been filed
With the secretary of state by the
state grange and the original pe-
tition for an initiative bill for
state control of hydro-electric def
velopment substituted. The old
petition allowed an unlimited bond
Issue while the substitute would
limit the bond issues to 4 per cent
of the assessed valuation of the
state, A new ballot title will be
necessary. r
Fire Destrpja Garage
, Fire Wednesday destroyed the
Ford garage at St. Paul with an
estimated loss of $9,000, with no
insurance. The garage was the
property of P. A. Bernard. The
origin is unknown, but is believed
to have started in the store room,
probably from a vulcanlzer. With
the exception of one car, all auto
mobiles were removed from the
building. The Newberg tire ae-
partment made the seven-mile
run but the building was doomed
before the department arrived on
the scene.
Rotartans to Aid Teachers
A motion was introduced at the"
weekly luncheon Wednesday of
Rotary club that the club go on
record for an increase in salaries
of Salm teachers, and that a com
mittee of three be appointed to
meet with the teachers and help
draw up a satisfactory scale. The
motion was referred to the board
of directors.

Crank Breaks Arm
C. D. Oppen, local welder, broke
his arm Wednesday morning as
the result of a kick-back when he
was endeavoring to crank his car
before starting to work: He had
attempted to start the car TSy the
usual method of using the seir-
starter, but this failed to work.
and he was forced to crank. Tne
motor was cold and the kick was
entirely unexpected.

Guard Still in Hospital
Lute Savage, veteran guard at
the penitentiary who was shot in
the recent prison break in which
Murray. Willos and Kelley fea
tured, is still in a serious condi
tion, according to word received
from the hospital where he is be
ing cared for. It is reported that
his condition has not improved,
and that bis powers of resistance
are growing feebler daily.

Northwestern RepalrcC
The Northwestern is still on the
Willamette river near Rice's bar,
about 4 miles north of Salem, and
will remain there, it is said, until
the river rises sufficiently to al
low Its trip on into Salem. In
the meantime the government
dredge Mathloma is at work
clearing the channel at that point,
and it is hoped that in the near
future the channel will be navi
gable by the boat, which is owned
by the Salem Navigation company
the year around. Wednesday the
wheel on the boat was repaired.
