Silverton
SILVERTON. Oct. 27. Spe
cial to The Statesman.) The Lu
ther league of St. John's church
held an interesting meeting Sun
day evening at thje church audi
torium. "Hymns of Trust' was
the topic of distussion. Miss Han
nah Olsen led in this! In accom
paniment with the discussion A.
O. Nelson sang "One Sweetly Sol
emn Thought," and Gordon Mc
Call, sang "The Cross of Jesus
Mr. Nelson also gave an interest
ing talk on "The Power of Song."
A large-audience attended the
evening's meeting;
The Woman's, club of Silverton
held a most interesting meeting
Monday afternoon "at the home of
Mrs. H. p. Latham on Mill street.
Creating special interest was the
discussion on "Women in Poli
tics." The discussion was led by
Mrs, Latham. Mrs. Latham em
phasized' the influence of women
in the government; "This influ
ence," she said. "Is not brought
about so much by the actual vote
as through women's organiza
tions." During' the discussion it
was brought out that one-third of
the women in the United States do
not vote, but. that the influence of
12 millions of women is brought
to bare. upon all measures in which
women are interested.-' It was
urged, however, "that all women
with the right go out and vote for
their own man 'and their own
measures. The child labor amend
ment wag discussed to some ex
tent and it' was thought that thisi
measure would go through in the
state of Oregon without any diffi
culty. Great pressure, the club
women reported, is being brought
on the measure by all women's or
ganizations. - '-
Mrs. 03tergaard gave a number
of Chinese poems, and interpreted
them in a very interesting manner.
China will be studied extensively
during the winter. Oregon history
and women's activities will also
come in for a part of the winter'"
study.
At the business meeting it. was
decided to, change the date of
meeting from Monday to Tuesday,
in order that the women can meet
In the city library which is being
