a duu, iivvc.L,L,ixsu rLACE:- Trust In the Lord and do good;so
sfiaTT thou dwell In, the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Psalm
37:3.- . : -
It is a good illustration of the importance of patronizing
your home merchant. You have a chance to see your money
again. But if there is a break in the chain, and the dollar
goes to a representative of a foreign house, it disappears. It
goes to help the people of a uistant city. 1 "
The Statesman is publishing another page advertisement
this morning in the series designed to show the folly of pat
ronizing itinerant peddlers, bell-ringers going from house
to houso. - !--V . !
The patron of the bell-ripger is twice stung. He" pays!
more than the purchase is worth, and he withholds patronage
from the people who make it possible for him to have
employment for his labor or profit for his business.
Think what a city Salem would be if everybody here pat
ronized only home people, and bought only homes made goods,
ta the full extent that was possible! !.
It is estimated that Salem might by this one act provide
for doubling her population.
How are these for slogans: What Salem makes makes
Salem; what Oregon makes makes Oregon?
WHY NOT GET BUSY AND GO DOWN THE LINE?
Why:not get-busy and goi down .the line, for a beet sugar
factdry in' Salem? We can get it if we will go after it and
stay with it everlastingly .. ",'
In either of two ways.
First, -by putting, up to one of the big concerns owning
anoT; operating. beet sugar factories throughout, the country
the fact that we can secure contracts for enough sugar beets
to keep a factory going and then go and get them.
Second, by organizing the growers into a cooperative
. company, the same as is being done in Ohio and Michigan.
'' JThe most important development for the Salem district
1 was the work of putting the flax and linen industries: on the
-map in a substantial way. This has been or is being done;
though great expansion may be looked for as time goes by.
,The next most important development for this district
is beet sugar' factories, with all this will mean in the expan
sion of our live stock industries.

KEEP YOUR DOLLAR WORKING AT HOME
There is a familiar illustration of twenty men forming a
'Circle; the first man displaying a silver dollar and paying it
' on an obligation to the second man, the second man paying it
. to the third, and so on around the circle '.
Till the dollar comes back to the man who first had it
- So the dollar pays twenty bills and is ready to start on its
" way again. . , .
The bee keepers of Marion and Polk counties are pro
posing to organize and put their industry on a basis where it
will have all the favors and protection to which it is entitled.
May they make their organizations strong and fine, and so
render this the greatest and beet bee center in the United!
signing all the checks as soon as
I eot it so. ot course, it won t
States.
