Will G, Allen, of Hunt Broth
ers, Visits Head Offices
in California
Will G. Alien, manager of Hunt
brothers' , cannery, has J returned
from a trip to California,' during
which he visited the head offices
of ' the cannery. According to
him, the prospects, are 'good for
cannerymen in the tforthwest. .He
said that "some lessons are to be
learned" by the cannerymen; of
this section, as a result, of the
year's experiences.
That the cannery - business is
enlarging is evidenced ty the re
port that Mr. Allen brings - back
from the south. He said i that
9.000,000 cases of peaches were
canned-this year in Calif ornia-or
about twice as many as have been
packed in : any "previous season.
He said that their entire output
was "cleaned np" as s the demand
was enormous. -
j ; Mr; Allen ; believes that It the
right price Is taken,' the consum
ers will buy alt the goods that
the cannerymen have to offer. He
cited as proof of this ' the . fact
that Englishmen have been buy
ing large quantities of loganber
ries since they have been given
the prlght price.
He predicted that there will be
a large development of . the berry
industry if prices are not too
stiff. In his opinion the cannery
men will begin to reap the great
est benefits of their, efforts when
"reliable fruit men put their pack
into the hands of reliable r can
nerymen year after - year: with ', a
fair price which will bring some

better way of making returns
than from exorbitant prices.
He stated that the apple pack
this year in the northwest is
large, although there is a short
crop in local orchards becanse of
the large number of wormy ap
ples among the apples of the can
ting grade. He said that most
of the apples being put up at: the
local canneries are being brought

Pacific Forensic - league. The
league will meet i there In the
spring for Its annual meeting, and
it is certain that an extemporan
eous speaking contest will be held
at that time. It is the hope ot
several schools members of the
league that a. debate, tournament
will be held at the same time. ' ,
Prof. Rahskopf atates that the
try outs for the debate team will
be held in the latter part of No
vember, and training will start im
mediately after that. The debate
season will commence sometime
in February, and will last through
the first part of April. .

lamette Campus; Tryouts

The debate prospects at Willam
ette university are exceedingly
bright, according to Prof. Horace
Rahskopf. head of the public
speaking department at the uni
versity and coach of the debate
squad. Charles Redding and Joel
Berreman, the nwn thai represent
ed Willamette on a debate tour
last year, are both back in school
and have signified their intentions
of turning out for the team. James
McClintock, who was also a mem
ber of the debate team last year,
is back in school and will be out
for his old berth. In addition to
these William McAllister, a mem
ber of the freshmen debate team
last year, is looked upon as- a can
didate for a position on the team.
Most of this year's debating by
Willamette wilt be done on the
home floor. Redland university
of Redland. Cal., will journey to
Salem for the purpose of meeting
the Willamette team. .This will
be the fourth annual tilt between
the two schools. Willamette has
won two of the three debates al
ready held with them.
TheiCoIlege of .the Pacific of
Stockton, Cal., will also come to
Salem for the third annual match
with Willamette. Both' of the
previous contests were . won by
Willamette. ?
Whcaton college of Wheaton,
Illinois, is planning to make a, de
bate tour through' the' west, and
have expressed a desire to meet
the Willamette : team. Pro I.
Rahskopf is quite sure that the
debate will be held. There is also
a prospect of a debate in Salem
with Whitman university.
A dual debate will be Jheld with
College of .Fuget Sound. One side
of the debate will be upheld on
the home floor, and the other side
of the debate will be held in Ta-
coma, site of that school. .
Robert Witty, a sophomore at
Willamette, Cas been appointed
manager of the debate team. Here
tofore it has been up to the chair
man of the Willamette forensic
council to manage the debates, but
in as much as the chairman is us
ually an aetive member of the de
bate team, the executive commit
tee of the student body did not
consider it fair for him to have
so many - responsibilities. ; w Mr.'

versity and OAC In aa endeavor to
arrange '. debates with , i those
schools Definite agreement has
not yet been reached with, either
school, but it Is the hope of the
