arrested and convicted in the dis
trict uourt for Big Horn county,
charged with possession of narcot
ics. Federal agents found in his
possession a sack containing 56

Big Sheep explained that he is
a leader of the . congregation of
the Native American church and
that the decoction from the but
tons is a necessary part of the
ritual of the church. State and
federal laws say it is a prohibited
narcotic.' The, Indian , appealed
from the decision of . the district
court, citing three scriptural, ref
erences which " he alleged as his
authority for possession of ' the!
buttons and use of the liquor
made from them.
These include the - second verse
