Washington fair at Piiyallup have
kept him from, attending the Ore
gon fair. Mr. Johnson- captured
a first and second j prize oh a
Barred Plymouth pullet, the same
fer a White Leghorn rock and hen
and second, fourth and fifth on
cockrels of the same breed.
Perhaps there are few- people
in Salem who have seep more state
iairs man jonnny Jones, caterer
for the Elks club for years who
is this year 'enjoying his T2nd
fair, operating an eating conces
sion for the past 16 years and
having; employment in some, of
ficial capacity or other for the re
mainder. The year 1873 saw his
first appearance and had it not
been for the Lewis and tlark ex
position in Portland in 1905. he
would have added another fair to
his list.
Some excellent . pieces of hand
work are on display in the tex
tile department this year. Chief
of these, and the one that is com
manding the greatest interest is a
crocheted rws, 9 by 13 feet, en
tered by Mrs. Alfred " Mann i of
Portland. An offe of $1200 has
been refused for the rug. Mrs.
H. J. Yenne of Salem has entered
a spinning v wheel brought from
Germany more than 50 years ago.
Two olti spreids are on (Tlr.piay,
one a hand--oyen j wool spread
more than 10(1 years old, entered
by Mrs. Ella Pianfc (jf Woodburn,
and the other entered by Mrs. J.
C. Jenks of Salem. The latter
spread was made by her mother,
Nancy Ann Young, and has. the
figures 184 2 woven in one eorner.
Mrs. HalVorsen Of Salej has en
tered two woven wool .sheets.
There is a large department de
voted to children's .work and all
displays are on a larger scale than
ever before , .

A handsome silver trophy cup;
has been donated by , llartman
Bros., jewelers, to be awarded to
the best car over all at the motor
style show parade and review to
be held Saturday afternoon before
the grandstand. . Auy car whether
large or small is eligible for com
petition, for this award. The de
cision will be made by the judges
after the last car has passed'in
review Moving picture men will
be on hand to take pictures of the
grand prize car and of the cars
winning ribbons. These pictures
will be shown in local theaters.

tance at th4 rate of 1153 yards a
minute. Lean Bros., with a flight
of 1151 yards a minute, placed
third. The first" bird arrived 79
minutes after leaving Salem,

A collection of Indian beads
valued at Several thousands of dol
lars is on exhibition by Mr. Mon
roe, who has spent a lifetime gath
ering hisl collection. Mr Monroe
lives in Modoc county, northern
California. The bead work is
chiefly that of the Pitt Indians
and adjacent tribes.

department at the fair grounds
Mrs. Cook admits she has attended
nearly 50 state fairs and is proud
of her record. She has been here
in the capacity as special officer
for .the pa'fct 10 years. During the
attendance at the fair Mrs. Cook
has become convinced that the
musicians jneed a building of their

"We ar glad to have the boys
leave their instruments with us,
but it is sd crowded here that we
are often afraid that the instru
