II. Peterson of Portland, Or., pres
ident of the National Association
of Retail Druggists, today scored
the "cut rate" policy of merchan
dising as "plain bunk," harmful to
the drug business, and likened to
tactics of the "cut raters" to a
blow below the belt, in an address
before the annual convention of
the organization here.
Mr. Peterson Tilled the one-cent
sale a "commercial monstrosity"
because, he said, it creates an un
fair and harmful impression in the
public mind relative to a pharma
cists' profit. If the sales were
logical twice a year, why not 52
times a year, be asked.
Mr. Peterson said the past year
had been marked by a "national
orgy" of price-cutting, "unpreced
ented in bitterness and foolhardi-
ness." and declared the purpose
of the cut-rater was to sell enough
other goods at a profit to reim
bnrse him for his loss on "bait
merchandise.
