heary mill construction. For ex
ample, it 13 a rather common
thing to put steel caps on top of
wooden columns. It is stated that
this Is an error, because In a hot
fire the cap will fail before the
column will crash. . A concrete
cap has been designed for topping
columns under load that will not
fall before the column Itself. This
cap has been patejnted, but the
ownership of the patent has been
assigned to the put3i Although
there has never been a heavier
demand for sny of the construc

Phi Kappa Pi Now in Readi
ness for Coming School;
Year at Willamette j
Several Improvements are betas
made at the Phi Kappa Pi frater
nity house In preparation for the
coming rail term. Furniture is
being revarnished, new wall paper
being put up and the house is In
general undergoing the process of
re-bulldlng and annual fall house
cleaning.
The work is being done by in
terior decorators assisted by a
number of the boys who reported
early and for the most part are
either local men or candidates for
the football squad who reported
to be on hand for the initial prac
tices. :, i : .', "
The work will be completed by
Monday morning when the uni
versity opens for registration . al
though this necessitates a rush
job that has kept several of the
boys at work well Into the early
hours' of the morning.
Local Real Estate Men
' Locate in New Office
j :
Though not yet complete ia de-1
tails, the new office of Becke &
Hendricks, local real estate firm,
is being occupied along the south
side of the entrance to the Heillg
theatre entrance. The new loca-
tlons gives the firm one of the
nlcests offices in the city and
being on the ground floor, prac -
tically surrounded by glass, offers
numerous advantages for display-
tng property listed for sale.
Weekly Building Permits
Show Total of $42,000
During the past week permits
have been: issued from the city
recjrder's office for the construc
tion of buildings which will cost
totally $42,000. The permits this
weeks have been confined almost
entirely to the erection of dwel
lings. $41,000 will go to the con
struction or dwellings, and . a
warehouse she costing $1000 com
pletes the total.

the builder uses half the structure
and derives an income , from the
remaining floor space. Frequent
ly two small families will combine
their resources In financing con
struction of a duplex and find con
genial companionship in the occu
pancy, of adjoining suites, but the
investment feature is more often
the Incentive for buildings of this
' class. I .' V
The accompanying design for a
duplex has many obvious advan
tages of floor plan, combined with
pleasing exterior. Its resem
blance to a cozy single family
dwelling makes, this type of du
plex less objectionable than other'
types to strictly residential
neighborhood. It may be finished
in clapboards, shingles or stucco.
The living rooms are large and
well adapted to furniture placer
ments. Dining rooms are of ample
' size and each is provided with a
disappearing wall bed. - Kitchen
and breakfast nook are well ar
ranged. Stairways to the base
ment and upper story are handled
with economy and bathrooms are
well placed in relation to other
rooms. '" y
An upstairs i chamber 14x11.9
feet In size adds materially to the
advantages of either suite. Each
bedroom has closet space and a
storage room also is provided on
the npper floor.
