Willamette Uniyersity is an
nouncing the first of a series of
lectures to be given in Waller Hall
during the winter on questions of
cultural and scientific value and
of popular interest. These lec
tures, are being arranged by the
regular faculty committee on out
side lectures, of which , Processor
EarVT. Brown is chairman. They
are to be open to the public and
are Intended to be a part of Wil
lamette's offering to community
entertainment and education.. It
is hoped that such a series wilf
become a permanent annual con
tribution of the University to com
munity interests. .
i The first lecture, will be given
by Edward C. Raine. who wfll
speak the- evening of September
24 on the subject. f'Alaska." This
lecture is illustrated with one hun
dred fifty slides and is built out
of the experiences of twenty-five
years' residence in Alaska, during
six of which Mr. Raine was a rep
resentative of the United States
treasury depatrment and visited
each year every town and village
in the territory. 'Mr. Raine, is
vouched for by - the Jnneau -Dispatch,

derson, short story writer and
'novelist, , author of "Winesburg
Ohio," and of the novel "Dark
Laughter," which is to be pub
lished in October; Lewis R. Free
man, author of "On The Roof Of
The Rockies"; and William Web
ster Ellsworth, member of the
Century company for over thirty
years, and now lecturing on
Shakespeare and Old London."
Mr. Ellsworth lectured at the Uni
versity several years ago. betoi
very appreciative audiences and is
certain to receive a: welcome If he
chooses to come again.
