Miss Frances M. Richards, dean
of women at Willamette univers
ity, 'returned home on Wednesday
of last week after a summer's ab
sence In the east. Miss Richards
attended a special course offered
for deans of women at Columbia
university daring her first sit
weeks la New York city. Later
she visited friends at Madrone in
the Adirondacks and at Cambridge
and in Chicago and Michigan. An
interesting part of the return trip
was the journey down the, St.
Lawrence river.
WCTU to Meet
The WCTU wiU meet at 2:30
o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the
halls for the election of officers.
A large attendance Is desired on
account of this business. Each
is asked to bring her Flower Mis
sion report.
Mrs. Steeves on Visit
Mrs.. B. L. Steeves left on Fri
day of last week for Vancouver,
Wash., where she is the house
L guest of her daughter, Mrs. Paul
Morse. Before returning home
the latter part of the- month she
will go to The Dalles to be the
guest of Dr. Grace Young.
Woman's Club Meets
An exceptionally large number
of Salem club women were pres
ent yesterday afternoon for the
opening Woman's club meeting of
the new season, which followed
the board meeting scheduled for
2 o'clock. Mrs. William Fordyce
Fargo, the new president, presided
throughout the afternoon. The
time was filled with committee re
ports on divers subject. Of par
ticular colbr and interest were the
various reports which were given
relative to the Marshfield conven
tion. Those reporting were Mrs.
W. E. Anderson. Mrs. W. E. Kirk.
Mrs. John H. Albert, Mrs. Harry
J. Wiedmer and Mrs. C. K. Spaul-
Iding.
An Interesting project was plan
ned which will take the form of a
'salvage shop." something like a
rummage sale, pometmng like a i
bazaar. The shop will probably
open soon after the fair. Plans
were also made for some land
scaping around the club house.
This will be in charge of the house
committee. Of particular interest

Rev. Charles W. Ward, pastor
of the First Congregational church
is planning an interesting series
of moving pictures, for this win
ter at the evening services. To
night Rev. Mr. Ward will show
some unusually beautiful moun
tain pictures which he has secured
to Illustrate the text of his eve
ning's message. The congrega
tion will! have the pleasure of
meeting this morning In the re
decorated auditorium. The floor
Is completely covered witb a taupe
velvet rug. while the walls have
been done In a rose softened gray
with all woodwork In ivory. The
pews have been re-varnished and
all the pulpit furniture gone over.
