How closely motor truck trans

trial life of the country and the
tremendous strides th!s form of
transport has made the last few
years is graphically shown. In a
tabulation recently compiled by
the White Company listing; the
owners of 10 or more White trucks
and showing the growth of these
truck fleets year by year. Known
as the White Truck Roll Call this
tabulation forms an excellent bar

The new airship mooring tower!
which has just been completed at
Dearborn was erected without a
single serious accident. Although
handling of , the 70 tons of steel

progressed surely and smoothly.

Prince Eugene Napoleon
Nicholaus, youngest brother of;
King Gustar V of Sweden, is
establishing a reputation -as one -
of Europe's really great paint-
crs. lie snuns court ceremony.
"I can make the trip without
changing from high gear."
"You're crazy; it can't be done.
I'll bet you. ..."
And so the wager was made.
Mr. C. E. Greene was to drive Wa
Chandler coach,: with all trans-'
mission gears locked, except the
"high" and "reverse" gears, from
San Diego, California to Phoenix,!
Arizona and return. The out
bound trip is more than 400 miles
in part 'over steep mountainous
roada.V but Mr. Green made it
without much difficulty in 11
hours and 26 minutes.
On the way back, however, he
encountered adverse conditions
such as few motorists ever meet.
Sixty miles from Phoenix he ran
irfto head winds of such velocity
that for miles he was compelled
& drive ' with one hand, mean
while firmly bracing the wind
shield with , the other to- keep it
from crashing under the terrific
wind pressure. Again, thirty
miles from Yuma, Ariz., an ex
tremely violent sandstorm was en
countered. The sand pellets, we
are told, struck the car with such
force that the paint was removed
from the license tags, the wind
shield glass and headlight lenses
were deeply scored, but, surpris
ing as it may seem, the Duco fin
ish on the car body withstood the
attack of the sand and showed no
ill effects.
The homeward trip was made
in -12 hours and 32 minutes
elapsed time. Mr. Green had
proved his contention, winning
the bet, and Duco likewise won
its. battle in the sandstorm.
An unusual feature1 is provided
in the "Motorcade" of the Illinois
Automobile Club which leaves
Chicago early in October for an
unusual expedition to Florida and
return.
Av special moving picture cam

and historic places on the trip
The same equipment was carried
with this Willys-Knight Six when
it made the same trip early in
July and August to ; Belect the
route over which the Motorcade
was to travel.
It is expected that some on
usual photographs ot Chicagoans
and their families and friends will
be taken on this most pretentiou
cavalcade when more than 100
members of the I. A. C. will take
their vacations a la motor to the
sunny southland.

The first White Roll Call pub
lished In 1916 lUted only 86 own
ers operating a total of 2.538
Whites in fleets of 1 Oor more.
Back la 1910 but a single firm
W. & J. Sloane. of New York
owned as many as 1 0 Whites. This
pioneer fleet has grown to 37.
On Owner Operates 1738 Whites
, On the present roll call there
are 35 owners operating in excess
of 100 'trucks each. The owner of
the largest individual fleet is the
Gulf Refining Company with 173S
tmcks.lrepresenting an investment
of more than Jj.OOO.OOO. The
company purcha?ed Its first White
truck In 1911. -
; A few of the other large fleet
owners are The. Associated Bell
Telephone companies with 1183;'
the Standard Oil Company of New
York. 842; Union Oil Company of -California,
759 and the City of
New York. 711.
In addition to the users who op

many thousands of owners operat

than 10 and In single Installations.
The total value or all White tracks
and White Busses on the road Is
well in excess of $350,000,000.
Suspended on metal pivot bars,
a new door has been invented for
