be liable for debt to the full amount of all expenses incurred
in fighting such fires.
In succeeding sections of this act it is provided that
private informers shall, upon conviction of the accused receive
one-half of the fine paid. And penalty is even provided for
district attorneys who fail to comply with the provisions of
this law Still other provisions which are "teeth" for the
law are contained herein. "
The emergency clause emphasizes the necessity for this
legal protection of forests and other property. It is a safe
guard for millions of dollars worth of property and of human
life. It is the duty of every citizen to aid in its enforcement.

Mrs. Jennie Byrnes, a mother of two children, who
supported them by doing the Work of a scrubwoman while
her, husband was serving out a sentence in the workhouse,
found $100 in a New York office she was cleaning. She
needed the money sorely. Her rent was two months , in
arrears and! her children needed food and clothing. A woman
E. L. Elliott recently appointed by Governor Pierce to
the office of district attorney for Klamath county has been
indicted at Klamath Falls. The charge against Elliott is that
hp failed to account for some sugar turned over to him in the
spring of 1924 while he was special prohibition prosecutor of
Klamath county. It is reported that he enforced the law
while in office. He was to enter upon his duties under his
appointment Saturday. Later advices state that prohibition
Commissioner Levens has been informed of a secret indict
ment for taking a gun from a Mexican whose residence he
was searching for booze. Special Agent L. L. McBride with
Tvens during the raid has also been indicted for the same
offpnA livens. Both the raid and indictments were at
