; PlTe pf the latest type of warn
ing plates have been placed at in
tersections of streets known to the
police as particularity good places
for accidents , to frequently occur.
Tne new signals are - painted a
bright yellow and caution the mo
torist to proceed slowly. " These
plates. are, on Miller at Commer
cial; Lincoln at . Commercial;
Church at Court; Cottage at Court
and Twenty-first at State.'
According to Marten : Poulsen,
city . recorder; the ' plates cost ' 5
each and only the low condition
of -the city's finances is retarding
the placing of additional - plates.
When funds are available . other
of the dangerous intersections will
he marked in order to help cut
down accidents.
The plates are or malleable
metal and are designed to with
stand the pressure of many tons.
Cast iron plates, it is said, will
crumple under the load of a heaty
truck.. This type is gaining In fa
vor throughout the United States
and already Portland has installed
approximately 300 of them. Ore
gon City has its dangerous cross
ings marked in a similar manner
while other cities throughout the
state are placing them on the
streets. Vancouver, Wash., has
designated several of its streets as
through arteries and plates de
mand, that motorists .bring, their
machines to a complete, stop be
fore driving onto or crossing the
main artery. . . a
So far none of the Salem streets
have been designated as through
arteries and, no effort is being
made to have automobiles brought
to a complete stop.
Pear orchards this year are spotty, i
however, and in only a few yards
