REDUCTIOH in AUTO TAX
ASKED BY CAR BUILDER
CAR MAKER SAYS THE TAX IS
AGAINST TRANSPORTATION
General Reduction Shnold Include
Lifting Assessment ou
. Autos, Said
It is assumed that tax reductions
amounting to some $300,000,000
wil be made at the next session of
congret. But as yet, there has
been no indication that this tax
reduction will be extended to In
clude automobiles. The inequity
of all war leyles has already been
recognised by partial repeals and
it certainly seems unfair to tax
any one group, especially when
that group so vitally affects the
public welfare as does the automo
tive industry. ..
Automobile taxes .are taxis on
trrnspo.-tatlon. .Other federal
taxes on transportation have been
removed. Government authoritiei
have repeatedly acknowledged the
present ' levy on automobiles in
equitable and concede it should be
removed when conditions permit.
As a matter of fact, the automo
tive industry now pays all the
taxes other industries pay, and In
addition, must shoulder the addi
tional burden of a special wartime
sales tax. . .
The war ended more than eix
years ago. Today there Is aproba
bility of a $400,000,000 federal
surplus. And yet the American
pcbllc is still forced to pay approx
imately $31 more per car thar
would be necessary were the fed
eral tax on automobiles removed.
The elimination of the federal
tax on transportation would hate
a favorable effect on business gen
erally. The automobile industry
employs more than 3.119.000 per
son directly or indirectly. The
continued success ot the automo
tive industry is vital if the stand
ard of living and purchasing pow
er of .this great group are to be
maintained.
-Its welfare is Important to other
businesses as well. Today the
makers of" motor cars take 48
ot our aluminum production, 52
of our plate glass, 69 ot our
leather upholstery, 8D of our
crude rubber, and 15 of our
hardwood lumber.
The importance of the automo
bile Industry to tha railroads can
be readiy appreciated when we r
rlixe that motor transportation
products provide the steam rail
roads "with . more than 2.o00,0Pp
carloads of freight annually. IQ
fact, the.deeper one goes into the
making and markeilng'of automd
llles, the, more one appreciate!
what an cssentiaLpart the motor
car plays in American business
t nd social life; and the less reason
one finds for the continuation of
the time tax on'the Industry.
