WORK OF HONEY BEE
(Contiaaad from jigt t)
All we who are interested in the
fruit industry should Jboost for
the -use of "amber" honey, as this
is the kind that is produced in
our fruit. Until there is a greater
demand for this kind of honey,
beekeepers will hesitate to place
their, bees among the fruit where
it is needed. They will he inclin
ed to move to the alfalfa districts
where a lighter honey is obtained.

5 -cents per pound, to produce and
prepare for market. A stand must
produce 60 cakes of honey to
"pay," while our present average
for the' district is not over 20
pounds. From the standpoint of
honey value alone, most people
could afford to pay 50 cents for
honey rather than to keep hees.
However this is due to our un
willingness to make a' study of
beekeeping, which Is absolutely
necessary if any honey profit is
to be derived. With proper
management, an. apiary will yield
a very handsome profit. Larger
apiaries under expert care, placed
in the fruit sections for polliniza
tiont" and then moved, before
poisonous sprays are applied, to
mountain or meadow pasture,, will
be found niost profitable for this
district.

OF VALLEY PEARS
College : Authority Says It
May 8e Controlled by ;
Early Picking
Pear growers of (the Willamette
valley may protect their fruit core
breakdown -by early picking. In
vestigations .by Henry Hartman of
the Oregon Agricultural . college
experiment station, indicate (bat
Bartlett pears picked .when Hhe
pressure test shows a pressure of
21 pounds .or more show approx
imately no core breakdown, even
after the fruit has been in cold
storage for as much as 125 days.
Tests were made with other
leading pear valleys of the district
showing that when the fruit" is
picked before it is too mature
very little core breakdown trouble
is encountered.
.Willamette valley growers seem
to suffer more from breakdown
trouble than growers of eastern
and southern Oregon. This.'Mrt
Hartman thinks, is. because the
valley growers assume that their
season is three weeks later than
the southern Oregon season, and
that they should pick their pears
three weeks later. This is an er
ror, Mr. Hartman says, as the later
valley season more nearly coin
cides with the season in southern
Oregon. .
The pressure test for determin
ing the stage of maturity at which
the fruit should be picked was de
veloped -by the Oregon station and
has proved to be a. reliable guide
in determining the time of pear
harvest. . The experiment carried
on in this test extended over a
period of one month. The break
down shows first as a watff" con
dition near the core of. the pear
which later develops into a dark
soft area which soon .spreads
throughout 4he fruit. So far as
known it is not a bacterial but
physiological condition not yet ful
ly understood.
