'THE WAY MADGE MANAGED
VlVTO CHECKMATE LEILA
vt ;At Bess Dean's breezy entrance
into Leila Durkee'a room. I rose
c.f quickly to my feet and stood in
such a -position that It was im
possible for Leila's face to be seen
- - by the girl In the doorway.
j Upset nervously by the accident
'L.ta her ankle, I wag afraid .that
. -Leila might betray her aversion to
'-:Tithe other woman, and I did not
choose that Bess should have a
chance to fcloat -over this evidence
of jealousy, as her vanity would
:tterm It.
- "A tafcle?" I queried in exae
- iterated and pretended amazernen,
before Alfred could reply to Miss
010 Dean's request ."We don't need
" any table up here."
w'H: "Leila's not able to come down-
stairs, is 'he?" Bess Dean's voice
C'f 'apparently held extreme solicit
ude. "So Mother Durkee and I
planned to have dinner up here."
I paid a little mental tribute to
fctr, audacity, in naming our hos
U'leSs as a sponsor for the little
scheme which was altogether the
' yqungtwomah's own, but hastened
to forestall the assenting and en
Fj,thusltstic response which I saw
; unsuspicious Alfred was about to
.. . make to her. proposal.
'"""How perfectly ridiculous!" I
said with a little laugh of derision.
r can't L thing, of anything more
dismal than dinner in your room

. . "She shan't stir one step unless
I carry her-.." Alfred interposed,
tand'I thrilled with triumph for
' Leila at the protective possessive--'f..ness
in his tone. That the little
'. speech was galling to Bess Dean's
i.' vanity I guessed, but there was no
"-t trace of chagrin In voice or face,
; as she. tilted her head to-one side,
quirked her lips Into a provocative
.. . little smile and asked teasingly:
i p ti' f Isn't there any chance for poor
little me to turn my ankle? The
1 a -rewards , are -tempting don't you
; think so, Leila?"
V : . She took a . quick little dancing
step to one side and shot a swift
ii-, knocking glance past me at Leila,
.f ? -But Tay friend had taken ad-
vantage. of my shielding body to
pull herself together, and Bess
.f , Dean saw only smiles on her ap
7o pareatly placid face and heard
',.! nothing save amusement in her
lulirtiBg'Toice." - -
."Don't fall down-stairs to find
?"totrt, she . said with a careless Ht
; tie laugh for which I could have
hugged her, so apparently free
v from worry it sounded.
jtfc.- there C was a tiny warning
contained' in her. words which I
t; doubted,, f or5 Leila isn't subtle
Bess Dean countered It promptly.
. "Oh! I'll watch my step," she
-.o promised carelessly, "unless I get
riled over something," she added.
nu'Tben I'm likely to do anything."
I knew better. "Bess won't have
to move themtwo feet. Besides,
she prides herself upon" being , a
strong-armed lady." ;r- - r;
. I had made it Impossible for her
to do; anything ; Bave protest Al
fred's offer, and she was quick
witted enough tcvseize her cue.
"None better in the profesh,"
she returned, extending one arm
and flexing it In? amusing burles
qued fashion. . . .-, ,
"That's the result of long years
of school-teaching. I don't suppose
there's a woman In the business
that can snake a boy f Into the
isle by his coat collar quicker than
I can." ; -
As always - when Bess Dean
chooses her . humorously twisted
face and her inimitable drawl, set
us all to laughing, 'c
But when she had gone down
stairs, I noticed that Leila's smile
had faded first, and that some
thing very unlike amusement look
ed out from her dark eyes.
Leila Is Not Aumsed.
i.
. Her eyes flashed defiance into
mine as she spoke, but I gave no
'"""'bint of understanding her. I was
conscious . of Alfred's puzzled
;n glance. His .was the uncomfort
able masculine attitude when la
the presence of women whose ani
mosity to each other is only thinly
concealed, and so I hastened to
end the situation. .
v "Isn't dinner about ready?" I
....asked. . , ' V 'V . t V
, "Of course," Miss Dean replied
a bit tartly.
"Then If you don't mind telling
Mrs." Durkee that well be down
m five minutes," I went on, "we'll
make your words good. And 1
Imagine Leila will be more com
fortable if she has an armchair
apd a footstool."
."I'll get them for you." Alfred
hastily interposed.
.'They're right there in the din-
inj room," I said coolly, although come to her aid.
CHAPTER A
THE METHOD MADCE EMPLOY
ED TO HELP LEUA
" ' - " ' . i - ". "
I spent a most uncomfortable
hour during the dinner which I
had prepared - for the Durkees
with Bess Dean's aid. There was
nothing the matter with the vi
ands, indeed, we were the recipi
ents of many exaggerated compli
ments, upon our culinary skill
from Alfred, while little Mrs. Dur
kee and Lelia voiced their appro
val in no uncertain terms. But
the shadows of two unpleasant
and difficult tasks loomed before
me, robbing me of my appetite
and increasing the tension of my
nerves. t
Before the evening ended I
must fulfil my ; promise to Mrs.
Durkee that I would tell Alfred
and Lelia of Dr. Foxham's ver
dict concerning an operation for
her; thus sparing her the ordeal
ot revelation, and I meant also to
find out just what mischief Bess
Dean was engaged in manufactur
ing.. That there was some secret
between her and Alfred which Le
lia did not share, I was as sure
as I was that the attraction
which Bess had ; for Alfred held
nothing In it to give Lelia cause
for real uneasiness.
I came to these conclusions at
the close of the dinner, during
which I furtively watched Alfred
and Bess Dean. That he admired
the brilliant, sparkling girl im
mensely," was plainly to be seen,
but , that his reaction to her was
one of mentality rather- than of
the emotions, was also evident. On
the other hand, Alfred's tender
love for his fragile wife was to be
seen in every word and glance to
ward her. -I
What Madge Feared. t
I suddenly remembered Lillian's
trenchant words to me upon an
occasion when 1 Dickey's friend
ship with Edith Fairfax was caus
ing me uneasiness.
"Remember,"! she had said,
"the wife has the igame'Inher
own hands If she only chooses to
play It." f
But would Lelia play the game,
or would she spoil everything by
betraying the jealousy . of Bess
Dean which I guessed was racking
her? Nothing could so surely an
ger and disgust Alfred, for with
the usual masculine blindness to
the faults of a i pretty and clever ;
woman, he patently .considered
Bess a friend of the family whose
affronting would be a cardinal
sin. : " i '
That Lelia could not stand the
strain of pretence long, I was sure
as I caught the: feverish bright
ness of hey eyes and her height
ened color, when after dinner,
Alfred carried her into the living
room and deposited her in an easy
armchair before the big fireplace.
Her eyes did not leave him while
he coaxed the logs Into a brighter
blaze, and his mother, Bess and I
drew our chairs close to the fire.
"Look at That Clock."
"It isn't fair!" I said to myself
hotly, noting the cool insouciance
of Bess Dean's manner, and stir
red for Lelia against my former
colleague as I never had been for
myself. The two women were
most unequally, pitted in the con
test. Besa Dean was a woman of
the world, brilliant, cool, calculat
ing, ln-ordinately vain, and while
not really wicked, I bad no hesit
ancy in dubbing her unprincipled
in many respects.
Lelia Durkee,. on the other
hand, possessed neither Bess
Dean's mentality nor her poise.
She was also without a trace of
the other woman's unpleasant
traits, for Lelia Is the sweetest.
gentlest creature in the world, as
incapable of a ? mean or under
handed action as. she Is of fighting
her own battles 'unaided. She' is
'one of the women who need pro
tecting all her life, and her hus
band was lavishing that protec
tion upon her.' The citadel of her
life had seemed Impregnable until
tne inorainaieivanuy ana aiaoon
cal cleaverness of Bess Dean had
made a breach in the wall at the
only place where Alfred, could not

With grim - determination,
masked by smiles, I kept the con
versation In my own hands
through the hours following our
dinner.. I knew that Lelia Mould
not mind any exchange of badin
age between Alfred and me, and I
proceeded to indulge in what lit
tle Mrs. Durkee declared to be a
most outrageous flirtation with
her son. In my mother-in-law's
parlance, I did not permit Bess
Dean ' get. a word in edgeways."
"I declare, Lelia," she said with
a twinkle in her eye which be
trayed to me how thoroughly she
was enjoying Bess Dean's discom
fiture, "I wouldn't stand the way
Madge is carrying on with Alfred.
I only wish the Dicky-bird we"e

Just wait until I see him, that's
all!" . .
"We have 1 a working agree
ment." Alfred explained lazily.
"Every time one of us" Is out of
town, the other has a solemn obli
gation to keep all other flirtatious
admirers away. I don't know any
better way than to flirt With the
charming lady myself." ?
Bess Dean rose to her feet
abruptly, t
"Look at that clock!" she ejac
ulated. "This charming lady has

Russian Soviet Mariners
Live in Comfort and Ease
LIVER POLL The Soviet
steamer Bordienny, which visited
Liverpool recently, attracted much
attention among British sailors
not only because of Its social halls
elaborately furnished for all mem
bers of - the crews, but also be
cause ot tne long rest periods
provided for the men: On all
Soviet Russian ships the seamen
work four hours with eight hours
off, while the stokers do four
hour shifts with a 12 hour break
between their turns of duty. '
The Bordienny was visited by
members of the British Indepen
dent Labor party who were shown
the social halls,' and the sailors'
and f tremens' reception room, the
latter of which has a Lenine cor
ner where photographs of Lenine,
Karl Marx, Rosa Luxemburg and
other noted Soviet leaders ; are
shown.
It was explained to the British
visitors that Russian seamen are
never without a job or a ship.
If their vessels are tied up, or in
dock for repairs, the pay goes on
regularly until they got to sea
again, whether In the same or an
other vessel. One month's leave.
with full pay. is granted annually
when the seamen either visit their
homes or bring their families to
the port of their arrival., the ex
pense of travel being borne by
the state. rW. ? j -i -.. i
Most - Soviet vessels carry an
orphan boy, to whose upkeep all
the crew contributes. : This money
accumulates-, until .the young man
becomes of age. when It is for
him to decide what trade for pro
fession he 1 will follow. Most of
these boys come from the Ukraine,
and do odd jobs about the ship.
