in telling of the development of

remedy the situation in the coun
ty, system in which gaps of. unim
proved roads were left between

"In Douglas county,' he said,
"there .were.; places ..where ..the
roads were unimproved because
the county i looked at local needs

'The speaker stressed the im
portance of the present system by
citing the great number of cars
which are in the state.
"In 1917 there were only 47,
000 cars in the state. Now there
are 205,000, enough to form a
line of cars, touching thosebe

line on the; Pacific highway, and
also another line from 'Portland
to Eugene on the West Side high
way. He recommended the .John
Day canyon highway to : the Ki
wanians as a scenic road of Ore-
Igon and urged every Oregonian to
