turned, laughing at her.
"Oh, don't be tellin me that
now, an you just in from the city
with all your pretty clothes on.
Isn't the dinner to get? It's a fine
touch I have on peeling potatoes,
ma'am, -and as for setting a table
'She blew an airy kiss to the
ceiling, then turned briskly to
ward the kitchen. -:
"Just go upstairs both of you
and take your time. I can get a
lot done before, that 5:43 train
back home."
There was but one response for
Mrs. Durkee to make to this braz
en bid, and; she promptly made it:
-Never mind the 5:45. Why
can't you stay to "dinner?
Bess Dean made a deprecatory
gesture.
"No reason except that I don't
want to become a permanent free
boarder. I've been here so many
times." .. s
"And you're always . welcome,"
Mrs. Durkee returned with every
appearance of heartiness. "Be
sides. I wouldn't exactly call your
entertainment free. You work
for it harder than I like to. Mind
that you pare the potatoes thin
now."
"I'll scrape "em," Bess prom
ised, laughing, and disappeared
into the passageway leading to
the kitchen.
But I did not - need ' Mrs. Dur-
