Prof. Cordley of the Oregon
Agricultural College Has
Done Great Work -:
In. recognition of 30 years of
service , to, Oregon agriculture on
the staff of the state college, Dean
A. JJ. Cordley. of the school of
agriculture was deluged with
words of praise and affectionate
appreciation by more than 100 of
his staff, associates, and friends
at 'a banquet in the new Benton
hotel Thursday night in celebra
tion of his initiation into Alpha
Zeta, national agricultural frater
nity. Dean Cordley is the first man
to be elected to Alpha ?eta as an
honorary member from! Oregon
and one of the few ever? selected
in the United States. ! i
"The work that Dean Cordley
has done alone for the agricultural
interests of Oregon Is worth more
than the entire cost of Oregon
Agricultural college since its in
ception." declared W. K. Newell
of Eugene, former state food -and
dairy commissioner. lie cited the
: work of Dean Cordley in discov
ering lime sulfur spray, said to
have saved millions of dollars in
Oregon alone.
, A beautiful silver service was
presented to the dean by his staff
in agriculture at the close of the
banquet. Telegrams from former
students and associates from all
over the country were rea'd, ex
pressing the widespread apprecia
tion of the lasting results of his
long service as teacher, scientist,
and leader in scientific and prac
tical agriculture.
Ten years after entering the
course in agriculture at Michigan
Agricultural college in 18S5, Dean
Cordley came to OAC, where for
30 years he has been a leader in
scientific work and the develop
ment of the strong school of agri
culture at the college, now recog
nized throughout the country for
the high quality of its courses and
of; Its graduates. He holds the
degree of doctor of science from
his alma mater in recognition of
his services to agriculture and the
nationally, known value of his
scientific contributions, particular
ly the development of lime-sulfur
sprays, and control of anthracnose
and codling moth in the northwest.

The California garage was for
merly known as the Highway gar
age. Unusual conditions forced
a change of name. Although Mr.
Hickman had his shop registered
first as the "Highway Garage,"
other service stations and garages
opened up in Salem under similar
names, obliging him to seek a
less commonplace title. He then
chose the name of California Gar
age although he states that he has
in no way relinquished his posir
tion as a native Oregonian. j,
Hickman's shop is equipped to'
give service on any make of car,
in either mechanical or 'electrical
work. He also specializes in high
pressure lubrication and greasing;
using one of the latest compress
ed air shop guns. Tires, tubes,
oils, grease, tools and spare parts
are among some of the things on
sale at the shop:'
A special service to customers
is given In that the garage calls
for and delivers cars left in their
shop to be repaired. 1 A new ser
vice car is being constructed,
completely equipped for- towing,
and will be ready in a week or so.
Mr. Hickman has - grown up
with the automotive Tndustry. and
has been working on cars since
the days of the two-cylinder Ueo,
and the time when' they cranked
Fords on the side. He was re
cently offered a position with the
General Motors company, where
two of his brothers? are working.
Within the next four or five
weeks, a large addition will be
made to the garage, enabling
greater service, due to enlarged
floor space. This will add great
ly to the scope of work handled.
Mr. Hickman now has a complete
service station and an up-to-date
garage.' -'
